PC Help needed ASAP

Hey guys/gals

                   My friend have a Compaq Presario 4410us computer. For a long time it was not working because the power supply was dead. so today we bought a new power supply and I installed it into the pc. Now the problem  is that it powers up but then I press the power button to shutdown the pc it's not shutting out. Also on the screen I can see counting numbers for like (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 in MB and it goes up to 512MB then its stops. Then at the bottom of the screen it says press (F10) but when I press F10 nothing happens. Remember I just replace the power supply.........I cannot get access to the  BIOS or CMOS......

Make sure the keyboard is fully and properly inserted...
Try a different keyboard...
Change the CMOS battery
Maybe a dead keyboard controller on the motherboard (that would be bad  )

Anyone else have any suggestions

here is what I tried so far. I replace the keyboard, removed CMOS battery, I press Delete, Escape, F2 at boot up but still the same as before..... any other ideas?

Does it give any indication that it is detecting the keyboard? I.E. keyboard detected mouse detected...

I know on some, they are set to perform a full test on startup (thus the slow memory count up) and may take time to go into BIOS.

sorta sounds like a few times when i've not connected the PS correctly, or knocked some other connection loose during the PS transplant.

Do the keyboard LEDs flash during the Power-up sequence? If they do the keyboard is connected. If they don't it isn't (or there is a fault). Does the PC speaker bleep (if it's less than 5 years old it might not - might not even have a speaker)? Why does it suggest pressing F10 - to enter BIOS set up, to select boot device? Is 512 MB the correct amount of memory? Does the Hard Drive spin up? Do all the fans spin?

Since you see the count you know the CPU, memory and graphics card have approximately the correct power levels, so the voltages they depend on (+ and - 5v?) must be correctly connected.

1st question is, where did you get the power supply from, and is it a factory replacement or a generic type?

a good clean is a good idea, also remove and reseat ram, video card, modem, and all other cards

other than the things mentioned here, no

time to replace pc, a compaq with 512 of ram is probably 6 years old and not that good hardware, sounds like a dead motherboard

I think F10 is the key to hit during the boot to access the BIOS on a Presario. Unfortunately it is possible for a bad power supply to spike the motherboard as a final act of spite when it kicks the bucket.

Hey guys good news all I had to do was change the jumpers for the CMOS then go through the system setup wizard. thank you all for helping me you guys/gals are the best Pclinuxos for ever....

Hey guys am back again lol, am experiencing a weird problem. I can restart the pc but when I shut it down then press the power button to turn it back on nothing happens the only way I can turn the pc back on is by removing the battery from the motherboard, unplug the power   for 5 seconds, then plug the power back on and replace the battery then it powers up. That is the only way I can get the pc to turn on after I shut down any ideas?

new motherboard? because this is not normal unless you tried other os and don't experience this

This defiantly has nothing to do with the OS. This is clearly a hardware issue.

Everything else works fine I can restart, play music, go to control panel install programs, uninstall programs and much much more. the only thing I cannot do is shut down and restart. I never had this problem with computers before all I did was replace the power supply, replace the batter and install the operating system....... I even went to the cmos the check the settings everything seems fine there. one more thing I realize ever time I restart something its still counting the Ram until it reach 512MB and some other messages comes up then goes off the screen.  I try pressing pause on the key board but it still goes of so I cannot see the message........ any Ideas guys/gals?
