[SOLVED] How do I turn off file indexing?
« on: May 05, 2010, 04:41:21 AM »
I searched the forums, but found no joy with the search terms I used.

I have 2010 KDE installed on a single-core machine and I want to turn off the file indexing to cut down on the running processes, but haven't located where to do so.  The widget shows itself as Tracker, but I didn't find that in any of the control panels or as a stand-alone app (I might have missed it.)

The machine isn't running quite as fast as I'd like, and in trying to pare down the overhead running the indexing service is one I'd like to disable.

Could it be a Plasma Widget?

If  you go into System Settings (wrench & screwdriver icon), click on Advanced User Settings------Desktop Search. Uncheck the box for  Enable Nepomuk, which should turns off Strigi the desktop search feature in KDE4. You will know its been done when it gets greyed out. If you didn't want to turn it off completely you can also control what files  are being indexed by unchecking boxes in the the file indexing tab.

Open Synaptic and remove the tracker package. You can leave the libtracker in place. You will need to logout and/or reboot for change to take effect.

I found this made a huge difference:

I hate to add to this "solved" thread but, what does this indexing do? Is this what makes Firefox start up slow on the first boot, but fast every other time after that?

Rudge, file indexing services like this build indexes to speed up local searches.  Windows has a similar tool which I also don't install or disable if it has already been installed on a machine.

I very rarely search for anything locally, and if I do then I don't mind waiting a little longer for the results instead of always dedicating some resources and hard drive time to preparing for them.

I don't think the tracker package is installed by default in the initial LiveCD installation, but maybe its "pulled in" by other programmes when they're installed (not active on my setup anyway)
