setting up a poweredge 1650
« on: May 04, 2010, 04:22:03 PM »
i got the os installed & running but had trouble configuring eth1 as the lan adapter. i decided to give server 03 the boot and play with pclos. i have it running on two other machines behind the server and wanted all computers to run the same os for familiarity. right now i've got centos working but would rather use pclos because i like eye candy and liked the tools that came with pclos better. pclos would get a dhcp ip address on eth0 from my 2wire gateway just fine but i couldn't get the dhcp server setup for eth1. i manually configured it for a private network but when i would try to activate it, it would fail. i'm not a total noob, am familiar w/ cl just not very proficient with linux. can someone give some advice puhleeeeeeeeaaaaaaazzzzzzzzz

ps luv the distro btw, i've got my kids puter runnin on it for educational soft and they really like it too!!!

is there anyone who knows how to setup a second adapter to feed a lan? when i try to manually configure like i did in cent os the adapter will not activate. i would prefer to run pclos on my server but for now i'm stuck running centos as i cannot get the second adapter configured for a lan.

I am not sure about your setup .......  can you please clarify your connections and to what they are going?

Are you using both NICs for the one LAN segment or do they have different addresses completely?

Can you use fixed addresses on the NICs?

I am probably not the one to help with this, but more clarity on your physical setup would be a good idea if someone is to get to grips with the problem.

regards.

here is a diagram of my setup basically what i'd like to do is run pclos on everything from the server on. which i have accomplished except for the server. i am currently running centos with eth0 setup as the public adapter and eth1 as the lan adapter and it works just like i had it with server '03 from cough microsoft cough. eth0 is to be on a different subnet than that of eth1.

OK your eth0 is OK and eth1 is problematic.

WRT300N ......  is there a DHCP server running on that?

If so eth1 should be able to get  its IP address from there as (presumably) are the other PCs connected to the switch.

I have two connections on this PC .......  one wireless and the other wired eth and both receive their IP addresses from two different routers without any problems.

So how have you configured the eth1 segment of the LAN?
What is running the DHCP server on that segment?

.....  or maybe I misinterpreted the diagram?

yes there is dhcp on the 300n but it only give addresses to wireless clients. right now i have dhcp server setup on the 1650 it serves addresses to anything on eth1. so the 3 desktop & the 300n obtain their addresses from the 1650

Ah!
So that is the nub of the problem.

You need to set up a DHCP server on PCLOS to serve that LAN segment?

PCLOS does not come standard with the packages installed to be used as a server OS, so the necessary packages will need to be installed using Synaptic.

The best option that I am aware of is to launch    drakwizard   and from that choose what you want to be installed and it should arrange things for you.

EDIT
I should have asked ......  why not set up the 300N to issue IP addresses on the LAN?

regards.

the 300n is actually setup in my garage to extend the wireless range and to support lan parties when i have them. i did have dhcp installed before when i tried running pclos but was still unable to setup the lan adapter. i will try again with the live cd later, gotta go to work now.

well, i booted the live cd downloaded dhcp server, configured eth1 with a local ip, configured dhcp it said it started, tried starting eth1 and it still won't start. i guess pclos isn't ready for server level hardware

yes i used the dhcp wizard and it said it configured and was done. i tried starting the adapter and no-go, i tried setting up to share internet connection but without eth1 up and running it won't go past selecting the public interface. firewall is off. i dunno.
