Dell laptop locks up when the lid is closed.
« on: May 04, 2010, 11:45:05 AM »
I recently installed PCLOS on my Dell D505 laptop and after a couple of learning curve issues,(thanks everyone), I have everything up and running. However, I have one last problem to deal with and hopefully there is a simple solution for it. I have my laptop set to "blank screen when lid is closed" under power settings. But when I close the lid and open it again, the screen stays blank. I can see the pointer but cant move it and I have to restart the computer to get it going again. I haven't tried  hibernate, sleep, or suspend yet, so I don't know if they are working right yet or not. Any body know what the problem could be?
                                                                                Many Thanks.

I forgot to add, I works fine when the screen saver is on. Only when the screen is blanked.

Have you tried unticking the Powerdevil option in Configure Your Computer >> Advanded User Settings >> Power Management.

After changing the settings restart your desktop before you close your lid.

Alright, this is getting embarrassing. I clicked on "Configure Your Computer", but couldn't see Advanced User settings. Am I missing something? Does PCLOS have a "You ride the short bus" mode? :D

Is it the same on the Gnome desktop?

Is what the same? The Configure Your Desktop >> Advanced User Settings  commands or the blank screen problem?

If you are referring to the blank screen problem, I don't really know, but I don't think so otherwise it would of been reported.

Did you try the "powerdevil" option?

Have you checked you have the correct graphics driver installed and setup properly?

Did you try the hibernate, sleep, or suspend as you mentioned earlier - if yes, with what results?

Have you tried any of the following?

Configure Your Desktop >> Advanced User Settings >> Power Management >> Edit Profiles >

On the Screen Tab have you tried enabling/disabling the "Enable Display Power Management"  option?

On the Actions Tab there is an option to "Disable desktop effects if active" - not sure whether thats worth a try.

And there are other options which may be worth giving a whirl

Sorry, I meant the the Configure tour desktop. The reason I'm asking is that I'm using the Gnome desktop, and on this and other sites, people are using KDE desktop. My friend and I installed the KDE version on his laptop, and in the menu we see configure your desktop right where you said it was. I just don't see it on mine. Hibernate, and sleep mode work perfectly. My work-around to this problem is to put it to sleep before I close the lid. When I open the lid the laptop wakes up normally. By doing that, it isn't much of a problem any more. Now I'm just curious as to why I can't find a menu item in my system.

Not a Gnome user I'm afraid but I'm sure they'll be similar type options available in your setup.

I sort of had this problem myself, don't know if its anything to do with this thread, i was using a blank screen saver, lock screen on resume was checked in my CONFIGURE DESKTOP- ADVANCED USER SETTINGS- POWER MANAGEMENT, now this is probably something to do with which themes i am using etc, but when i closed lid and opened it back up the screen was blank, I could see the cursor, because the lock screen on resume was checked i knew i had to enter my LOG ON password.....but couldn't see the box to type.....i just typed my password and pressed enter...i was back on my desktop then!

Hi hangbelly, welcome to the pclos forums ;D  I have had this problem on several notebooks. After going through several of the options you are trying, one day I noticed that when I closed the lid of my notebook and opened it to soon, the computer seemed to hang.  If I leave it closed about a minute or two it would then wake up correctly.

I also noticed that if I closed it at least five to thirty minutes the power button would start blinking.  I could then push the power button and the computer would wake up properly.

Try setting the settings back to "default" and then set the sleep timer to one to five minutes and see if  the computer will sleep when the lid is closed.  Remember that it may take up to one minute to completely resume everything to wake mode if the hardware is all asleep.  Sometimes I have to hit the enter key to get to the log-in window after reviving from sleep.
