Partition Problem
« on: May 08, 2010, 05:05:22 AM »
Hi folks I wonder if someone could help me.  I have just downloaded and run the latest version and I want to install it with win7.  The C drive has 2 partitions one for OS and the other for documents.  PClinux only wants to install in the documents partition which is a lot smaller.  I would like to install as a dual boot with windows, any guidance?

Thanks

You first need to create empty space -- space not covered by any partition -- on the HDD, to hold the second Operating System.

Does this mean that there is a different install method from previous methods of PVlinux?

No.

What do you think is different?

Hi DonaldM,

Can I make one suggestion? Just in case any problems crop up I would make back ups of any data/docs/music etc etc that you want to keep, prior to doing any partitioning and installing, and preferably put the backups onto USB stick or CD/DVD.

You can't install Linux on the same partition as a Windows installation you wish to retain. So you have to shrink the Windows partition to free up some space for your Linux installation. Then you can let the installer use that free space for a dedicated Linux partition. Or you can create it yourself before you install.

Detailed recommendations are hard to give as you haven't told us enough about your system. In general terms you should:

1. Take menotu's advice and back up everything you don't want to lose. This is a safety measure. You probably won't lose anything, but if you do, you'll be pleased you have a backup. You may not have to back up Windows itself if you have a disk that you can reinstall it from.

2. Then decide how large you want your Linux partition to be and resize your Windows partition accordingly. luikki's link will tell you how to do it from within Windows.

(The consensus seems to be that you should do it from within Windows if you don't want Windows to protest later. I'm not really convinced that this is good advice as neither DiskDrake nor GParted -- run from Linux -- has ever trashed a partition for me. The Vista partitioner has. But I was probably just unlucky.)

3. Install PCLinuxOS the normal way from the live CD. Use the unallocated space you just freed from your Windows partition.
