ktorrent kills my internet
« on: May 03, 2010, 03:13:01 PM »
Hi everyone, so, I have a small issue.  I just upgraded my main computer to 2010 (which is beautiful btw), but I am having some issues with ktorrent.  Ktorrent runs ok, and I am able to download things, however, if I leave it on for too long, my internet "dies." At this point I don't know it it's my router doing something or if it's an issue with my setup.  As long as I don't have ktorrent on, my internet will remain active, but if ktorrent is on, i will loose activity.  the netapp stills says that I am connected, but I will not be able to access anything.  I have tried disconnecting from the net from the netapp, as well and actually unplugging the Ethernet cable, but when I try that, I won't be able to reconnect.  I even tried restarting my router, but nothing changes.  The only thing that solves my connection issue is restarting the computer.  right now this is not i have ktorrent set up

port 6881
max connections: 120
global max: 200
DHT: off

not sure what other information to put, but I thanks everyone in advance.

Your ISP is probably behind the torrent shaping. I have ATT DSL and I use to be able to download a torrent and continue using my other services. They changed something last year so now when I do bittorrent even with throttling enabled, I am unable to access my other services. I can stop the torrent and wait a few minutes and my other services become available again.

My buddy who is was on Comcast said they started sending code to your torrent client making it think the torrent was finished so it would simply stop transferring anything.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Try lowering the max. speed allowed for torrents, about 70% of your normal speed, and/or lower the max. connections per session.

Just 2 cents

I capped my upload to 40 since I did the install to not strangle my network, so I don't think that is the problem.  Ill try to lower the max connections per torrent, and I'll try lowering the global max again.  The biggest problem is that even if I quick ktorrent and wait, my internet still doesn't come back.  Like I said, I have even tried disconnecting and reconnecting from the netapp in the task bar, but it fails to reconnect. Even disconnecting the ethernet cable does nothing because it, again, fails to reconnect.  Torrents have never been a problem for me when I was using 2009.2, it's only now that I am using 2010 that this issue has come up.  >_<

ISPs pay attention to port 6881 because it is the default for torrents. Try switching to a much higher port number, like 34449, and make sure you have your router's port forwarding set to allow that. That usually helps my connections a lot.

ill have to try that.  in the mean time, i think I might have done something right, because ktorrent has been on for a few hours and everything still works.  I'll try a few more things to see if I can recreate the problem and report back what I found.  Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

well i thought everything was fixed, but i spoke too soon.  I tried a really high port number as was suggested, but that didn't stop the problem from reoccurring.  When I was testing the last time (when i though things were solved) I had set the max global connections to 150 and ran 2 torrents.  I tried upping to limit to 175 max global limit, and again everything seemed ok, until I started my 10 torrents, the the internet died again.  Mind you, it has never died instantaneously, but it still dies.  Any more ideas out there?  :-\
