I'm currently working on packaging Python 2.6.5. It's my first rpm, so this could take a little while to work as it should, but it's already compiling successfully (I've finally managed to get the tkinter module working...). I hope I can upload this thingy soon!

Are you sure? I think everything that is running with 2.5.2 should be able to run with 2.6.5 as well as python 2 should be completely downwardly compatible. Or do you mean that the packages in the repo expect a python 2.5 to be present instead of a 2.6?

I'll check how far I get with this - if it really doesn't work with the other packages I have at least learned to create my first rpm. ;)

Thank you for the welcome! I was already wondering what has happened to my replies... :)

Looks a little like I'm talking to myself up there. People will think I'm ga-ga (maybe they are right  ;D).

Welcome to packagers. There are a much smaller group watching and responding to comments/questions in the packagers section. If you don't get a response right away, it doesn't mean something is wrong. Just wait awhile, we're all here eventually. I don't know much about the python package details, but I know that it is important to many packages in the repos. I am staying away from the critical stuff, until I get more experience.

I was just wonder fon77 how the  python 2.6.5 build is coming along.

I was just thinking about doing python 2.6.X myself and saw your post. Dont want to do double the labour. I was looking at doing a non-obselete build which would retain the original build of python 2.5 in the repository for 2010. Thus not forcing a rebuild of those packages currently relient on python 2.5.X.

Any ideas of suggestions would be great. I have a lot of that now seem to have a need for 2.6.X. To have both would be great. Then once python 3 comes out obselete 2.5.X as the migration to 2.6.X can be done over time.

Just some thoughts.

Let me know what you think.
