Touchpad scrolling doesn't work (solved...spontaneously)

EDIT: Don't know why, but I suspended the laptop for the night and in the morning it worked (including qsynaptics configuration).

I just installed 2010 on a new Compaq CQ61-410US.  Touchpad scrolling does not work.  I installed both qsynaptics and synaptiks to see if I could configure it, and it gives the following error:

Warning: Touchpad configuration is not supported on this system.  The synaptics driver is either not loaded or too old.  Refer to the documentation for the information about the required driver version.
The help says that x11-input ver 1.2 is recommended, but the latest installed version is 1.1.3.

Any ideas?
