I have installed SCIM to be able to write Chinese characters.

Installed packages are:
scim-bridge-0.4.2-2.20060907.2pclos2007
scim-bridge-qt-0.4.2-2.20060907.2pclos2007
libscim-bridge0-0.4.2-2.20060907.2pclos2007
scim-1.4.4-10pclos2007
scim-qtimm-0.9.4-6pclos2007
libscim8-devel-1.4.4-10pclos2007
libscim8-1.4.4-10pclos2007
scim-chewing-0.3.1-2pclos2007
scim-m17n-0.2.0-2pclos2007
libscim-m17n0-0.2.0-2pclos2007
uim-gtk-1.2.1-3pclos2007
libuim1-1.2.1-3pclos2007
uim-1.2.1-3pclos2007
uim-qtimmodule-1.2.1-3pclos2007

I have edited .i18n file as instructed on SCIM website, ran scim -d command. There is the icon in the tray, but the SCIM doesn't work (neither clicking on it nor key shortcut doesn't change the input). I can access the setup though.

What else can I do? In PCLOS 2009 SCIM worked right after intallation.

Hi, tvbtiger,

I don't know if you've seen this already, but there is a discussion thread on inputting Chinese with SCIM and FCITX here:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,62520.0.html
"scim (solved)." 20 Sept. 2009.

Although the info applies to PCLOS 2009, hopefully the majority of it will apply to PCLOS 2010 as well. Even if it doesn't solve your problem, maybe it will point you towards a solution ... HTH.

Yes, I'd read this one. I also played with FCITX (though it's for simplified, and I want to use traditional), and with KDE locales, system wide locales, have probably each and every Chinese font package available in the repo installed, but didn't manage to make SCIM work. It just hangs there, not doing anything.

I remember in pcc setting up keyboard to use SCIM in advances options in PCLOS 2007, but now there is no "advanced options" there to set up. I modified i18n manually to add necessary lines, but it didn't help.

Sorry that suggestion didn't work out for you. I also didn't realize that FCITX is only for simplified characters, so thanks for that clarification. (I took Chinese for fun during my final year as an undergraduate, many moons ago [1981], but haven't used it since then and have forgotten almost everything).

I have one last tip you might try. You may have already seen this thread, so apologies if you have ... Especially take a look at slowbleed's final post:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,60476.0.html
"(solved) Japanese input -- scim/skim, anthy..." 30 July 2009.

Wow, it seems I figured it out! The important hint was in that thread you linked
"The input method editor is not working in any editors.
When I right click I only encounter"...

Ctrl-Space never did anything for me. But then right-clicked in my text editor I got this "Input Methods" entry in the context menu. I selected "SCIM Input Method" and finally got a floating SCIM window with "English/European". This I was able to left-click and switch to "Japanese/Anthy" and finally I am typing Japanese! Once I did this I am able to switch between the Latin/Romaji and Kanji/Kana input with Control-Space.

HTH.

P.S. I like your signature line. (I think it says 'I love Linux in translation', right?)

I had already tried right click in FF and Kwrite. Just checked OO (never worked there, though) and installed abiword just to check there (that had always been working). No options to change input method in any, but Abiword - but here is no Chinese here (I can use Russian though).

I also followed other links in that thread, but they either don't apply, or suggest something I've already tried.

Cześć, tvbtiger,

Sorry that didn't work either. I just sent Archie a private message and asked him for help. I think he's our resident expert on this topic ...

Although it sounds like you have Googled this problem a lot, maybe you could take a look at these links and see if they have anything helpful:

You can found useful information in the link proposed by Hans but be cautious, KDE 4 has severe encoding bugs so expect problems in several situations. I recommend you a search in bugs.kde.org.

Konsole, Konqueror 3 or other similar tools will be your best friend when you have encoding problems.

About input engines, I try practically all available, my system is an openSUSE, and with UIM is the most stable an reliable in KDE 4 for Japanese so, probably, works fine with Chinese.

I wonder - there is no skim in the repo. In the old system I had had skim set up in locales file in KDE3. I wonder if that might have something to do with it.

Adding all UIMs, FCITXes, etc. adds them in the setup, but still not way to change the IM...

Thanks for all your time :)

I don't know PCLOS Chinese environment.
My environment and your environment are different,but I am using scim-bridge now.
Please refer to my file.

/etc/sysconfig/i18n

LANGUAGE=ja_JP.UTF-8:ja
GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge
LC_ADDRESS=ja_JP.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=ja_JP.UTF-8
QT_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge
LC_NAME=ja_JP.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=ja_JP.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=ja_JP.UTF-8
LC_TIME=ja_JP.UTF-8
LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=ja_JP.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=ja_JP.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=ja_JP.UTF-8
CONSOLE_NOT_LOCALIZED=yes
ENC=utf8
LC_MONETARY=ja_JP.UTF-8
XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d"
LC_PAPER=ja_JP.UTF-8
XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM

I modified XIM_PROGRAM

Installed packages are:

libscim-anthy0
libscim-bridge0
libscim-input-pad0
libscim-prime0
libscim8
scim
scim-anthy
scim-bridge
scim-bridge-qt
scim-input-pad
scim-prime
scim-qtimm

I hope you will find it helpful.

Mine is almost identycal in "critical" places. I edited mine to make them identical - no change. Scim starts with the system, but I can't choose an input method.

$ uname -r
2.6.32.11-pclos2.bfs

My environment is not Chinese, but it was never an issue before.

I give up... for now at least. Seems like this is something connected with KDE4. I'll use a tool to write, called CantoInput, it should be ok until I manage to find what I do wrong, or whatever is wrong with packages and it gets fixed.

Ok, seems like SCIM works... but in Opera. Not in FF and any other soft I usually use. Today I opened the Opera browser and SCIM "magically" activated itself.
