K3B works on LXDE.
« on: April 30, 2010, 12:22:57 PM »
I was finding Xfburn to be less that adequate on my LXFE install, so I tried installing K3B. It required a 60mb download since it had to install KDE base and other KDE related dependencies but it is a lot more functional that the other burner software available. It does a much better job of recognizing hardware and it allows you to make .iso files from your media. So far it works very well.

It would be really nice if K3B could be rewritten with some common user interface like gtk4 so it could operate on many OSes with different desktops.

K3b is mostly for KDE, but it will pull in anything that is required.

Any of the burning apps for Gnome and gtk based will work on LXDE since LXDE is using gtk.

Just bought an external DVD RW drive and tried to do backups of my Netbook onto DVDs.

In LXDE I tried Xfburn, but this seems to be restricted to CDs and doesn't do DVDs.  Grafburn does recognise DVDs, but gave some trouble, but I couldn't see how to make it go down symbolic links, so that was no good.  Can't see any other burners in the LXDE repo by searching "burn" or "burner".

Switched to a partly installed Minime, and installed the latest K3B.   AOK, handled symlinks perfectly.  But, unlike the earlier version of K3B I use on another computer the disks were closed and not appendable.  I tried to find the settings to create an appendable disk (CD or DVD) but couldn't find them.

Help appreciated!

Look through the Gnome section as well as the archiving/cd burning section.  Anything that is GTK should work with LXDE.

I do like k3b as burner software. There are some good burner apps available for GTK, but k3b has that "something" that makes it worth the extra size on an install.

When you choose to Burn .......  check the last tab "Misc" and there make your choice from the "Multisession Mode" drop-down box.

I have yet to try burning a DVD under LXDE so I can't say for sure, but I thought XFBurn did support burning of DVD's.

Has anyone tried Brasero or Graveman under LXDE?

My burning needs are pretty simple so I am hoping that XFBurn will handle them.

XFburn does support burning DVDs. Open its Preferences and select devices. This will show you what your burner is detected as, what size buffer you have and other info. If your buffer is too small, you can not burn DVDs. My buffer is set to 4096 for my DVD-R drive. If your DVD drive has been detected as a CD drive, click Scan for devices. If it still is not correctly identified, check in PCC > Hardware to see what it is detected as. You can also try inserting a DVD in the drive before clicking Scan for devices.

I decided to go with K3B as I'm familiar with it even though my LXDE installation is becoming  a bit of a hybrid.

I found out how to make appendable, multi-session disks in the end.  The options are under the "misc" tab in the burn menu.  An obscure place since it was the default in the older version I was using.  Any way to make it the default?
