[Solved] Missing tooltips on task bar
« on: April 30, 2010, 06:20:36 AM »
For some reason plasma doesn't show all the tooltips when I'm logged into my main home directory.

This issue first appeared after installing beta 2 over beta 1.

Just installed 2010 final over beta 2 and the issue still remains. However if I create a new account, then tool tips appear flawlessly.

The solution I've tried is. Renaming my home/user to home/user_old. Doing a totally clean install with home/user. Then copying all my files except the configuration files from home/user_old to home/user.

(Hope that makes sense)

However the problem remains. All I can think of is there is some configuration file that affects the display or contents of the taskbar toolstips that I've missed or overwritten.

I assumed the taskbar tooltips are stored within the .kde4 directory. However I guess there must be other files that affect these tooltips.

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

I don't have a general solution to your problem, but I've noticed that the icons on the panel have several kinds of tooltips.

If you use Smooth Tasks, you will have to set up tooltips in the settings for that task manager. I haven't checked but this is probably true about other task managers too.

I have 8 widgets and 4 application icons on my panel. Five of the widgets and all of the application icons show tooltips. Those of the widgets that don't are Konqueror Profiles, the System Tray and Smooth Tasks. On the other hand the individual icons in the System Tray do get tooltips or popups of different kinds, and the individual icons in Smooth Tasks show tooltips if I set up Smooth Tasks the right way.

Following on from blackbird's excellent post, if you haven't already tried it, do a r/click on panel > smooth tasks settings > appearance > tooltips. and in their you have options for Smooth or Plasma and a couple of different preview styles
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Thanks Blackbird and Menotu. Unfortunately it wasn't just the "Smooth Tasks" tooltips that were affected and even after doing a file search I couldn't track down the text that appears in the tool tips. However I just noticed I was occasionally getting a strange block out of a random area of the screen when triggering the tooltip.

Thinking this was perhaps a graphics driver issue I accidentally solved the issue.

When I enabled "Configure Your desktop" > "Look & feel" > "Desktop" > "Desktop Effects" > "Enable desktop effects"

The tooltips began to function. They now function whether or not Desktop Effects are enabled.

And WOW! The desktop effects look extremely good.  ;D
