Beta2 packages
« on: April 30, 2010, 03:28:23 AM »
A week ago, I started a thread about 2010 Final not finding my HP printer/scanner and toolbox, whereas Beta2 automatically found it.

Since then, I have tried all of the solutions mentioned in various threads, but none of them worked for me.

So, I decided to experiment!

I have just run the Beta2 live cd and done another check that it found my printer/scanner. It did. So I upgraded it with all the packages which I thought were relevant (cups, gutenprint, hplip, hplip-gui, hplip-hpijs, hplip-hpijs-ppds, hplip-model-data, libcups, libhplip0, libsane-hpaio1) and tried the printer again. Up came the message: No installed HP devices found - as is the case with 2010 final.

Are the beta2 packages still available on a repository anywhere? I would like to experiment downgrading these packages from the final, to the beta2 versions, to see what happens.

Sorry if I am completely wrong in my thinking and in what I am trying!

Thanks.

Keith

I am almost sure there aren't any beta2 packages anymore.
Why don't you install task-printing-hp, instead of all individual packages.
It's made for that hp printer of yours

Hello Xenaflux.

Thanks for your reply.

Task-printing-hp is installed from the liveCD. I have tried re-installing it, but there is no difference.

I'll start working through all the suggestions on the various threads again.

If I still can't get the printer/scanner/toolbox to work, perhaps you can please answer this basic query. If I was to install Beta2 and then install all the three hundred+ upgrades for it (excluding the HP ones I listed), would I have the equivalent of the Final? Or are there packages in the final which are not in the beta2 upgrades?

Many thanks

Keith

Well, we were encouraged to install the final, not to upgrade from beta2.
So, I would think installing beta2 again is not going to work.
But you better wait for someone else to comment on this.

Sorry for your bad luck.

I'm definitely no expert however I did run beta 2 for some time and upgraded to 2010 via synaptic and had no issues. One of the upgrades was a new kernel. Could there possibly be an issue in the 2010 kernel affecting the HP printer packages?

BTW I've just reinstalled to the official 2010 release as recommended.

Well, my HP printer installs OK on Minime2010.
But I don't have a scanner/printer. like he.
Just a printer

Besides, if there really was a general problem, the forum would be full of it already.
It's just " one of the few ", unfortunately.

A follow-up.

For information.

During the past few weeks, I have been disto-hopping and doing a lot of tests, trying to find the reason why my printer/scanner works with PCLinuxOS Beta2 but not Final.

With all the distros I have tried, I have found that it only works with HPLIP 3.9.12. It doesn't work with 3.10.2, or 3.10.2-1 on any of them.

Cheers

Keith

Thanks, Xena, for your help and the information.

During my distro-hopping, I tried hplip-3.9.8 on another distro, but not 3.9.8-9.

I will certainly try it.

Cheers.

JohnBoy.

No, you didn't miss it! The original posting in this thread was a follow-up of another thread in Desktop Hardware (April 17th), where I asked for help in getting the thing going.  :-[ The model was specified there. Unfortunately, none of the suggestions worked, so I started this thread.

Sorry about that.

It's an HP B109a-m combined printer and scanner.

Cheers.

Keith

Thanks.

That printer should be supported indeed -- according to the models.dat  listing, which lists the
Code: [Select]
.......
support-ver=3.9.10

Have you tried manuall setting this printer through PCC ? ......

EDIT .......  just realised this is a wireless printer .......  yes?

JohnBoy.

Thanks for your reply.

My B109a-m printer/scanner is a USB wired model, not a wireless one.

In case I wasn't too clear, hplip-3.9.12 finds the printer, the scanner and the HP Device Manager.

Hplip-3.10.2-1 finds the printer with no problems. However, it doesn't find the other two parts.

The Device Manager gives the error message: No installed HP devices found.

The PCC Hardware Scanner Setup gives the error message: No scanners found.

I've tried setting the scanner up manually in PCC, but I get the same error message.

It's the same with the other distros I tried whilst trying to sort the problem, so it's not a problem peculiar to PCLinuxOS

Hope that this is a bit clearer, now.

cheers.

Keith

Found the HPLIP page for your printer: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/photosmart/photosmart_b109a_series.html
I'm no good with printers though.
Have you tried XSANE? (I have no experience with it though)
