PCLOS 2010 Kernel 2.6.33.2.bfs and mouse
« on: April 29, 2010, 10:28:36 AM »
I just installed 2010.  Like others have mentioned, truecrypt does not allow me to unmount.  Looking at messages, installeding 2.6.33.2.bfs kernel and setting a truecrypt setting solved their problem.  So I thought I would give that a try.

After rebooting (required hard bott as shutdown just halted and did nothing), Desktop came up, but no mouse.  Actually no mouse cursor.  The mouse worked (I was able to click on things by guessing where the cursor would be).

I also could not get to a console (CTRL-ALT-F1 for example).

I reset the links in /boot back to 2.6.32.11-pclos2.bfs so that I could login and enter this message.

Any thoughts on the lack of mouse cursor and the ability to get to a console?  I really need truecrypt so can't live long on the current kernel.

Thanks.

I got the same error with the PAE kernel. Went back to original and everything works.

Cheers.

wyohman,
somebody would have looked into it earlier if you had reported it when you saw it.

i use kernel 2.6.33.2-bfs and i do not have this problem, but i use a "personal" cursor there stored in my home directory(/home/<user>/.icons) and my set up may not be "standard"

have you tried a different cursor theme? There was no need to manually edit boot config files to boot to different kernels as all kernels will have their entries automatically added at install time.

I just saw it yesterday. My main OS drive died (I hadn't yet installed 2010) and I had to improvise. That's when I discovered the problem.

have you tried a different cursor theme?

I did and it made no difference.

Cheers.

I am keeping grub on its own partition so the menu did not get updated (I forgot to look at the menu on the partition containing PCLOS) to copy it over to my grub parition.

I did not modify config files, I just modified the link files so they pointed to the older kernel (vmlinuz, config, kernel.h, initd.img, system.map).  I'll be adding menu choices to my grub so I can boot to each until I can find a fix.

As for the cursor theme, where do I find this?

i dont see how and why a kernel should affect mouse cursors.

you can get mouse cursor themes from here: http://kde-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=36&PHPSESSID=5295c3221c0f47024b2adf2c7c9479fe

download the one you want and place the extracted folder in "/home/<user>/.icon". log out, log back in and X should use the cursor as the default

Please look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and post the video driver please. (fglrx maybe?)

can those with this problem also specify what kernel, video card and video driver they are using?

This is what happen when "old timers" find problem and work around them without solving them or identify the problem ...new comers hit them, report them we all start wondering out loud what is going on .. doesnt make a good impression on new comers .. :D

PCLos 2010 full/fresh install updated to present.
Present kernel with no mouse problems: 2.6.32.11-pclos2.bfs
Video Card: ATI HD 5670 with 512mb of DDR5 ram
Video Driver: the fglrx one from the repo: 8.712-1

Boot up with 2.6.33 bfs kernel and I get the same - no visible mouse cursor even at the login screen but the mouse is there, just invisible. :)

Edit: mouse cursor used is the standard default one.

i am using kernel version 2.6.33.2-bfs and have an nvidia fx 5500 card and all is well here. This problem seem to affect those with ati cards.

I believe the fglrx driver currently in the testing section resolves the mouse pointer issue with the 2.6.33.2 kernels.
