A very good explanation. Most of it I have picked up piece by piece during the last few years, but here it was all in one place.

But the linuxcritic could have mentioned one difference between the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/ and $HOME/.local/applications: the global ones list the generic names of the apps in a very large number of languages; the local ones (if for instance created by the menu editor) give the generic names only in the current language.

I suppose, for C#, we should start saying C octothorpe instead of C sharp....   >:(
