« on: April 28, 2010, 03:36:45 PM »
Hi,
is there anyway I can install my finger print sensor in pclos 2010 gnome ? it is the only hardware which is not working here.
I found two guides , but I am not sure which one is the right way to do it.
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_enable_the_fingerprint_reader_with_ThinkFinger
http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/6629/1/
any help is appreciated.
Regards

sorry I think what I posted was for thinkpad , here is another guide for n10j :
http://n10.wikia.com/wiki/Linux_HOWTO

it explains how to do it , but it says it is for debian only.

is is a fingerprint reader to log in to the system?

that feature is kinda "new" and not much laptops has it, in general it is not a popular function, most systems today are using the web camera to do a face scan(newer laptops and some netbooks)

i think you found as much as possible to do what you want, as you see is not much and is very specific for each distro on specific versions

the link on linuxplanet is for the older pclinux and older kernel, experimental

the other link on, the howto is for debian testing version if i remember correctly

it mentions a app called fingerprint reader that i can't fin on repos(maybe a package request?)

the last link mentions exactly a driver for this fingerprint readers that should be added to the kernel if it exist for the model you have, if not, the free version should exist, otherwise...

as i said, this is not a popular technology, usually the laptop that has, is more expensive   :(
