With Tommylee567's permission, I prepared a typeset version of his PCLOS installation guide with LaTeX. The content is identical to the original PDF, except for correcting some minor typos.

Additional changes and suggestions are welcome! Please let us know and we can issue an updated version. (For instance, I think it might be helpful to include a few screenshots of the partitioning process -- especially one involving a Linux-Windows dual-boot).

Thanks for your help and collaboration.

(With some luck, the LaTeX PDF attachment will hopefully work).

I think the guide is quite well done, but I also think it is just begging for screen shots and artwork.

Hi Tim,

A very good guide.  Well done.

I would like to make a few suggestions that may avoid future problems for newbies:
Add notes that:
1. Synaptics should be run after installation.
2. KDEbase4 should be reinstalled from Synaptic to restore the help files.
3. task-multimedia should be installed and run.
4. If Office applications are required click GetOpenOffice.  After installation run OO Writer, go to Tools, Options, OpenOffice.org, Java and ensure that the installed Java runtime environment is checked.

I'm sure some of the experts here can add a few more tips.

Regards,
Russell.

Only thing I saw on a quick read thru:   In 2010 I think all hard drives are all sda, sdb, etc:  NOT hda, hdb etc.
If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it!  If ya cain't fix it, ya gotta stand it.  If ya cain't stand it..............Visit the forum and search.

A BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL!
But as i said before, why not every one of you who has something to add to this guide add the things you suggested here? I'm sure we have to start again for a screen shot based guide. (which i'm planning next week). It is good to have a community do a part in this.
Mr. Russell, I will also upload the office doc file so anybody can modify it to make it better.
Be sure to keep the things easy so that beginners can understand. ALL are free to modify. (Linux is free right?)

I specially thank "kalwisti" for his favorite work using LaTeX. you can also download his version because it is better and clean than my one.

Only thing I saw on a quick read thru:   In 2010 I think all hard drives are all sda, sdb, etc:  NOT hda, hdb etc.
Thanks bro, I also thought of it because and we have to use both of them. like tell people 'sda, sdb' and 'hda, hdb' are common in linux.

THANKS ALL. Expecting to do more.
Regards,
Tim

For anyone who's interested,

There is a revised version of Tim's guide (typeset with LaTeX) which incorporates his numerous screenshots, as well as suggestions made by users here in the forum. It's now up to 26 pages long and 6.6 MB in size. The file is too large to attach here, so it has been posted on two websites:

Workaround #1:
This is my first attempt at using DropBox. I think it should be possible for you to view and download the guide without having to register for an account:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7269942/pclos-2010-install-final.pdf

Please let me know if you have any problems, and I'll look at other alternatives. I read reviews of two services, http://www.mediafire.com and http://www.box.net, which sounded promising; however, I couldn't get them to work at all -- when I tried to upload the file, Firefox completely froze.

Workaround #2:
The PDF is available for viewing at scribd.com:

In order to download the document, they still want you to register as a user (it's free). But at least this way, you can read the guide first and then decide whether to register (if you really want to download).

If you find the guide useful, please feel free to share it with your friends, neighbors or co-workers who might be considering a trial installation of PCLOS. Thank you!

P.S. to coffeetime:
Thanks for your suggestion, but when I tried uploading the PDF to ImageShack I got an error message telling me that the file was too large.

You do not have to register or be an Ipernity member in order to access the page. You should be able to download the PDF by simply clicking on the appropriate link.

If you find the guide useful, please feel free to share it with your friends, neighbors or co-workers who might be considering a trial installation of PCLOS. Thank you!

To download you must register and sign in. Bad news for those of us who refuse to do things like this.  :(

Hi, O-P,

Yes, I was disappointed to discover that when I tried it just now.  :( I have a PhotoBucket account (which I rarely use) and I don't know if uploading it there would also require registration for a download ...

Can anyone suggest some other free alternatives? I'm willing to register for such a service if it will allow folks to download the file.

Photobucket is banned here, as they've spammed the forum in the past. Next?

Sorry, it's ImageShack where I have the account -- not Photobucket. (That gives you an idea of how infrequently I use it). Do you think ImageShack would work for this?

Thanks.
