Acer Aspire One netbook and PCLINUXOS 10

I currently run PCLINUXOS 2009 but would like to install 2010 . Is it possible to upgrade the 09 with 10 or not? If not, I would like to install 10 seperately bootable before discarding 09. Netbook does not have CD or DVD- I have downloaded 600+ mb iso. How to install with some detail if you would please   Any particulars about backing up info before install? Can you run ISO on external USB thumbdrive?

Yep. Use Unetbootin from Synaptic

I installed PCLOS 2010 with a usb  thumbdrive made with Unetbootin onto a Acer Aspire 1410. and everything worked out of the box.

I installed unetbootin and ran it using the ISO file I had downloaded. It came up and asked if I wanted to overwrite some files, either yes,all yes, or no- I selected no. The program completed and said it was installed but needed to be rebooted. After reboot the grub file has been modified - the original 09 version, and the ubootlin line do not work - nor the safe mode- many lines were added and some are broken characters. The only option that still works is windows xp - which I (unfortunately) am now using. Any suggestions on how to recover or reconfigure grub to get at least old version back?  Don't know what I did wrong - there were not many options when running unetbootin.

What did you choose as "Type"?




USB drive? Did you check, if you've selected the right drive? Where exactly did you install Unetbootin?

I think I selected hard drive but not exactly sure what partition. I thought unetbootin was installed in linux when I downloaded with synaptic- I thought when I ran it that it was going to create a bootable image somewhere .

Why not USB? You talked about USB thumb drive, right?

It was installed on your PCLinuxOS 2009...Menu/Other programs...

Of course, but did you check where?

Before playing with Unetbootin, did you check Unetbootin's website?

Open Konsole, type su, enter password, copy/paste:

cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
and

cat /etc/fstab

and post back.

Don't worry rusty377. We all make mistakes. Don't give up. I'm sure somebody of our grub gurus will be back at you the moment you post back your Grub list.

I cannot do konsole or cat - cannot run linux to look at grub file....guess I will have to find something to look at file via windows.

Ahhh...sorry....can you make live USB with Unetbootin in Win? You will have to download ISO again

I was never able to create a USB from the iso. Nor a successful remaster disc. More my lack of expertise than a shortcoming in the program.

With my Acer netbook, I found it easiest to buy an external USB DVD drive and install from an iso burned to da CD-R. With PCLOS 2007, it worked with no problem. With 2009, I had to select VESA as a "suitable medium" boot option. All the 2010's I tried would boot from the usb-dvd drive without any problems, and install with the same ease.

It really helps to read every screen during the install. I've seen several warnings to MAKE SURE YOU KNOW which device you're formatting on the install, and which partition. Know what device numbers your hard drive, partitions, and external devices are labeled as beforehand, so when it asks you for your selection, you can give the right answer. I did this the hard way, but by my fifth install of 2007, I knew which drive was which.

I used windows and downloaded unetbootin for windows- selected USB (inserted device) and selected PCLINUXOS with KDE4 and waited a while. Moved over to netbook with USB and it booted flawlessly. I am now using ver 2010 as LIVECD (actually USB)and can look at grub files before and after booboo. How do you display these files in this forum? Called menu and menu old.

Odd, I used Unetbootin to throw it on my thumbdrive, and it worked a treat.
