2010 wireless not working Sony vaio TZ
« on: April 27, 2010, 09:43:06 AM »
The problem is getting the wlan to work on a sony vaio TZ11XN laptop

The machine has one OS, Pclinuxos2010 with KDE and kernel 2.6.32.11

Have tried to find a wifi signal at 2 public locations both having many known wifi options, the machine could not find anything.
The wired ethernet is working.
On the front of the machine is a wlan on/off switch next to a blue light, this controls both wireless and bluetooth, the light and bluetooth are both working.
Turning the switch on puts an applet on the taskbar, the menu in the applet  gives "connect wireless", choosing that option the applet changes by adding a small green arrow, after 5 secs the arrow leaves and the error message "network is down on interface wireless(Wi-Fi) (wlan)"appears.

Working through PCC to set up a new network interface, not changing the default settings in each PCC window results in this error message:
"Problems occured during the network connectivity test.
This can be caused by invalid network configuration, or problems with your modem or router.
You might want to relaunch the configuration to verify the connection settings."

The OS has been closed down and the livecd used, the problems are exactly the same.
In PCC the network interface (intelPRO/3945ABG) has been removed and the machine rebooted
in root konsole    "service -f network"    has been used.
synaptic showed two related packages ipw3945 and iwlwifi-3945 both have been reinstalled through synaptic

And thats the situation.

Some experts advice would be very much appreciated.

I don't know if you've done this so I will have to ask.

When you see this:
"network is down on interface wireless(Wi-Fi) (wlan)"appears.
did you click on the network monitor icon in the taskbar?  From there you can drop down the wireless interface and a list of available connections should display.  When you click on one of them and try to connect for the first time and configuration windows will open where you can set your preferred DNS and other settings, then it should connect.

Until you configure the hot-spot in there, it will not connect to it.  At least that has been my experience.  After the hot-spot is configured for the first time, it should connect to it automatically whenever it is in range.

Hope that helps.

IIRC, you need:
ipw3945d
ipw3945-ucode
iwlwifi-3945-ucode

Thanks for the replies.

I think I tried everyway to find a connection. I sat in an airport hotspot where the laptop of a person next to me had a choice of 7 signals to connect to, the sony could not show one.

Thats the first time the ipw3945d file has shown up. The information on that file in synaptic gave some good leads.  Searched around and found papers on the licence, regulations, installation, coding, troubleshooting. Looks like theres lots of reading to be done to check the coding in this sony.

Again, many thanks for replying.
