Problem with zen.mini gnome

Problem with zen.mini gnome
It is brilliant and to be commended. However:
I have installed it on USB external 250 gig drive. partitions / swap,
usr, var, and home single user.

My machine: intel pentium 4... 3 giga hertz, one gig ram.

It installs without a problem, and runs perfectly.
If I shut down and reboot it is without fault.

Problem: if I run synaptic and install say cup for instance everything
goes fine, it installs and works.

Now if I shut my computer down and then reboot, it will go fine until it
reaches the log in gui. The login screen is asking for user name and password, the curser is blinking in the user name box,
but now the keyboard and mouse are frozen. Period.

Reboot same problem. Reinstall use synaptic and the same problem occurs.

So until I solve this problem it is not unusable.

Can anyone help out?

keep smiling.
don

donfield:

Curious; why did you put /usr and /var on separate partitions?

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

One other thing to consider when you have resolved your issues, is that you can, (if you wish) set your system to "auto-login"  (Use PCC Control Centre > Boot > Setup to auto login.......)

Note: if you do set auto-login, consider the consequences; also not wise if your system is shared or used in public etc.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have used up my broadband quota, so now down to dial up speed for the next two days.
I will wait untill I have a fast connection to try the updates etc.

I tried auto login and it does auto login to my desktop. However, keyboard and mouse are frozen still.
My graphics card is Leadtek PX9600 GT.

The reason that I have usr and var on separate partitions is to keep them separated for backup purposes.
I always keep home backed up periodically for obvious reasons.
I will report back when I have fast internet speed and been able to try all the suggestions.
Thanks.
Keep smiling I say.
Don.

Hi,
I reinstalled zen-mini gnome.
I used synaptic to do an update.
Rebooted and all is fine.
I then used synaptic to download mplayer and mplayer gui.
Rebooted and all is well.
I then used synaptic to download printerdrake.
Rebooted and the problem reappeared. keyboard and mouse are frozen.
This happens everytime printerdrake is downloaded and installed.

I have tried pclos minime and it does not have this problem.
My main installation is pclinuxos 2009. kde3 it is without fault.
This is installed on an external 250 gig USB drive.
zen-mini is also installed on an external 250 gig USB drive. but fails with the installation of printerdrake.

Must be something to do with the installation of printerdrake???

Any more suggestions.

Thanks.
Don.

Just to clarify  (I don't use gnome-zen-mini ) from your post it seems that printerdrake isn't installed during the main default installation of zen-mini and you then have to install it ?

Have you tried installing zen-mini on an internal HD to see if printerdrake still has problems - mind you it shouldn't really have problems if its internal or external  ???

You could try installing printerdrake before doing any updates

If you then update and you have problems you'll know its one of the updates causing it (this is clutching through  ;) )

Can You change repo and try again ? did You try config Your mouse and keyboard after that ? try in safe mode run pcc and configure again mous and printer...

Thanks for the info siamer - that's what I'd assumed.
