Is anyone aware why the 2.1.0.47-2 non-static version was pulled from the repo?

Hello,
        I tried LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skypeand my webcam worked. ;D
ButI noticed this error running continuously  in the console window.

libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: 0000ffff
libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: 0000ffff
libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: 0000ffff

libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: 0000ffff
libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: 0000ffff

When I stop the video test it halts the above scrolling in the console and ends with:
X Error, request 42, minor 0, error code 8 BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)

I can manage to start Skype from the command line, but young and elderly relatives need to be able to just start Skype in the normal way.
Thanks.

Thanks understandable... Only thing I can think of is 1) get a webcam that works oob with the current kernel, or 2) get a webcam that works oob with the current kernel,.. (I mean wait until regressions are worked out with current kernel)  ;) :D

Hello,
It took quite a while to get a webcam that worked with PCLinuxOS, and since PCLinuxOS 0.92 I have tried quite a few.Considering the number of webcams I have that work with 2009/KDE3 and those of relatives, replacing them all over again would be rather wasteful as well as hit and miss.I can't justify updating to KDE4 the relatives and friends who I converted to Linux as I am sure the issues of problems and change would be too much for some.I already have some webcams that are unsupported in linux due to previous trials and errors :'( I guess I will have to wait.
The hardware data base that was available when I first came to PCLinuxOS, doesn't seem to be available anymore either. ???

Trustytrev,

I'm sure the hardware database is now being rebuilt against the 2010 edition of PCLinuxOS, as I am sure you are aware that the kernel we are now using is one of the latest yet still has some 'hardware regressions' that have not been addressed yet.  Patience is a virtue as there is nothing we can do to speed Linus and gang along..  :D

Joble / sammy2fish - re the mic - I have 2010 mini zen gnome installed and when I open skype the mic is working but as soon as I start a call, I can see the mic volume slider in 'gnome sound ' slide down to zero. I have to stop the call , move the slider back to full vol. and then it's ok. Wondering if it's doing the same in kde 4.

the only way I could get skype mic to work in kde4 was by removing libalsa ..I think that's the name of the package.and it pulled allot of other packages. can't be more specific right now..I am on the east coast of Sweden right now ...only have my AA1 with LXDE

Yeah, the last time my mic worked was on Beta1 with a pulse hack from davecs.  I'm going to try that eventually, just haven't found the time and it's not a very high priority at the moment.

If it comes to that, I have a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000, that didn't work correctly with the default kernel from the 2007-2009-2010 release, but worked perfectly with the later 2.6.27 kernel, without any tweaking on my part. It's still working, with no setup required, with any of the current kernels. The current Skype static works without issues with this cam, as did all other previous Skype releases once the 2.6.27 or newer kernels were installed. It uses the uvcvideo kernel module and has never failed to be detected and setup properly since that driver became part of the kernel itself.

I second old-polack recommendations.
Same results here with skype-static in 2010 and Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 camera.  Tried 6 different webcams and the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 has worked best.  skype-static 2.1.0.81 in kde-2010 has better performance (less sound echo)(even better video) than skype-static 2.1.0.47 in my 2009.2 installation, both using the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000.

I'll give it a try and see if it works on my built-in hardware...

Skype static works fine on my AMD desktop with a creative Optia webcam. However, I had some sound issues on my HP dv-1010el (also an AMD based machine). People I called reported very bad sound quality from me. The non-static version, not available anymore (was in the repos until Beta stage) worked perfectly but crashed when I try to chat.
Is it possible to bring back the non static version?
Will the non static version from PCLOS 2007 work?

Any clue please?
This being a package suggestion thread, with few more details I also have posted this at
