Kmail and Fixed fonts
« on: April 24, 2010, 11:36:00 AM »
If I try and print an email from kmail I most often find it crashes kmail. After a long time of trial and error I have found that if I go to view and check view fixed font and then print kmail will print normal and not crash kmail. Does anyone know why or have encountered a problem like this before. I would like to find out why it crashes without (view fixed font checked) or at least have this (view fixed font checked) stay checked by default. Has anyone had this problem or have any suggestions. Any help would be really appreciated.

I have the exact same problem and, until I saw your post, I'd given up on a solution. I even posted a bug report 4 months ago in the KDE bug tracker but I've not had one single response! Perhaps you may like to add a comment to my bug report, the bug ID is 219828. Incidentally, when I check "Fixed Font", it stays checked.

I've been having another look at this and I've discovered a workaround:

Settings -> Configure KMail -> Appearance

On the "Fonts" tab make sure "Use Custom Fonts" is checked and then in the "Apply to" pulldown menu, click on "Printing Output".
Select any of the Fixed Fonts from the list and then click the "Apply" button. In my case, I selected "Courier 10 Pitch" and I can now print emails without having to check "Use Fixed Font" and without KMail crashing. Perhaps this may work for you?

Thank you so much bitzbox

I tried your steps all except when I got to which font to choose instead of choosing a fixed width font I wondered what would happen if I chose the same as the default font that I was using. Which was microsoft Sans serif and it worked. Try it on your end and see if you get the same result if you would. Thanks I am happy now. It was not that big of a deal, it is just when I run across something like that it just naws at me like trying to remember someones name you forgot. You know what I mean?

I really don't know if this should be marked resolved or not because it is a workaround any comments?

I spoke to soon. Tried it again and it crashed. Choose a fixed font like you suggested and it printed. Looks like that is the way to go. Will update if this last.

The one thing that really puzzles me about this is that we seem to be the only ones having this problem, which makes me wonder if we're looking in the wrong place. Perhaps it's a printer-related problem - I'm using a HP F2280 All-in-One, what about you?
