MiniMe 2010 slow on AMD Thunderbird 1.4GHz
« on: April 23, 2010, 07:12:24 PM »
I've installed MiniME 2010 on the following system:

MSI K7T Turbo limited addition / with RAID
AMD Thunderbird 1.4GHz
Kingston 512MB 64x64 PC133 SDRAM, NON-ECC X2 (1024MB total)
Western Digital 40GB Ultra DMA 100 7200 rpm HDD (master)
Seagate 40GB Ultra DMA 100 7200 rpm HDD (slave)
Mitsumi 1.44MB floppy 3.5 in
Liteon 52x32x52 CDRW (master)
Liteon 16x40 DVD (slave)
Abit Siluro T400 64MB MX400 TV AGP
Oakland ATX Mid-Tower with 300W power supply

I'm a little bit surprised at how slow KDE 4 is running on this machine. There is lag everywhere from the menu kicker, to opening a window, or starting a app. Reminds me of trying to run KDE 3 on a 400 MHz laptop, maybe worse.

So I'm pondering, that either something is dreadfully wrong, or this old machine has finally met it's match. Do you need a dual core processor, and more RAM to run KDE 4? Is there a way to turn off all the fluff, and take KDE 4 down to a basic desktop?

I'm bewildered, ideas anyone  ???

Try installing the 'Vanilla' kernel (with out BFS) then reboot and see if that improves response and double check how the graphical server is configured iirc the mx400 uses the 96 nvidia and needs to have the composite extension unticked in PCC>graphical server>options.
