..this inspires a variation of my previous post:

As Root, two commands:
Code: [Select]
echo -e '\nalias su="su -"\n' >> /etc/bashrc
Code: [Select]
echo -e '\nalias kwrite="dbus-launch kwrite"\n' >> /root/.bashrc
..then restart your Konsole session; kwrite should work as expected in console.

Awesome!  O-P when are you going to publish your book (posts)??  From what I have read over the years in your posts on this forum, you
would have a best seller.  Now if only the KDE devs would only straighten out Dolphin so people could edit system files graphically under root.
You gotta have balls to play golf.

There may be some hidden gem in there somewhere, but being able to do it from a normal users dolphin window really does make that kind of superfluous.  ::)

I just right click and edit as root from Dolphin.

I tried the dbus-launch in root and it works. Great.  I also tried Tex's suggestion in the image above. In that image where it says 'edit as root' there's a little image of a pen and paper next to it, but on my machine, there's just a question mark and clicking on that option doesn't do anything. Anyone else experiencing that?

Do you still have the window called "Manage Profiles - Konsoles"  I can follow this topic easily but don't quite get the result I expect.  One of the changes, root shell keep reverting to "default" 8 point font size, that is a wee bit too small even with my glasses.

That's why one creates a new root profile. The default one defies change, even when done as root, but the new one works properly and can be modified.

The menus have changed, again, with KDE4.5 so here are new screen shots for the relative actions.

Now you Configure Profiles.

You still get the same Manage Profiles window.

First time select New Profile and create a new Root Shell 2 Profile. Later, to make changes, select the Root Shell 2 and Edit Profile as before.

Next select the Appearance tab and select the Color Scheme for the background and the Font size

When done click Apply, then OK.

The menu under File now has a New Tab sub menu that shows the profiles.

Note: in the second screen shot, above, I only have the regular Shell and Root Shell 2 checked to show here.

When I select Root Shell 2, a new tab is added, awaiting the root password.

Once given, One is root, in root's environment, and native commands now work.

You get some trash text output. I haven't a clue why the KDE guys allow this kind of sloppiness, but in the end, the command works and the file is opened by the specified application.

Thank you,  now I have got it, thinking back with the two root shells I got confused. I had even renamed to use my user name but only the shell, should have renamed the root shell that was more important.  Of course I tried to delete the offending, no good. To make sure I created a 3rd Shell. A bit more outrageous and it has held, ie I have 3 option when I want another terminal. I am going to make note in my records.

One thing that has disappeared recently, right click konsole window, click clear scrollback, nothing happens. Is that only me too?   ;D

I have no Idea what that is supposed to do, as I've never used it. The command clear works, to clean up the window, so I use that. Is the clear scroll back to limit checking the immediate history?

It was an accidental find when I started up really getting into pclos again, the action seemed to do the same as clear, if you have mouse in hand, right click and ready to go on a nice clean screen. Never thought more about it until the option disappeared,   8)

I am happy to know problem is reproducible. I am certain it was there before KDE 4.5, I have an unmodified pclos2010.07 install sitting waiting for a workout I will check there next time.

In this post here in the thread, you touched on the irritating problem to me, that the root shell konsole insists on 8pt font size, I have never been able to let go of that problem.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,71397.msg644316.html#msg644316

Today I was waiting for the umpteenth re-master to finish when I settled down to look the konsole again.  The last few days I discovered that I can 'hang' the multi tab konsole window. I diagnosed the problem but don't know how to fix it so I just marked the thread DIAGNOSED and have left it.

I believe I found where the Root Shell gets the 8pt value.  I am presently running with an 16pt font size just remind myself of the find.

/usr/share/apps/konsole/Root_Shell.profile

This is where the value 'hangs out', with judicious use of root privileges I changed the 8 to 16.  That was the easy part, I still can't get the panel widget konsole to look right so I have given that away and using the PC menu konsole configured with Root Shell 16pt not as nifty as the panel widget konsole use.

I am leaving the post partly for my own record as I refer to this thread regularly
