Help required in creating two extra partitions
« on: April 23, 2010, 02:43:27 AM »
I want to make room for a couple more distros,Zenmini being one of them.The only way I can gain space is by possibly shrinking an existing partition which contains Gnome 2009 and creating two new ones.Gnome currently resides on  /dev/sda1 partition.
Looking at the information supplied would anyone envisage a problem with this?

Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xbd72bd72

   Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1   *           1        7127    57247596   83  Linux
/dev/sda2            7128        7663     4305420   82  Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda3            7664        9729    16595145    5  Extended
/dev/sda5            7664        7919     2056288+  83  Linux
/dev/sda6            7920        9729    14538793+  83  Linux

The main problem with your plan is that you already have three primary partitions and you can only have four. The best you can do, without a total rebuild of your hard drive's partition structure, is create that one partition.

What lives in sda6?

Could that be backed up and shrunk to allow new logical partitions to be created there?

Thats a good point!LXDE 2009 lives in sda6 but it contains only 4.8GB free space which I doubt would be enough for Zenmini and ongoing updates.

It might be easier to buy a second HDD. They're cheap enough from online suppliers.
