No Speaker Sound - Only Headphones
« on: April 22, 2010, 03:19:17 AM »
Today I installed PCLOS2010 on this - http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/en/product/XC6469 - with these sound cards - ATI Technologies Inc|RV710/730 & Intel Corporation|5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio - and the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver.  Currently I'm only getting sound with my headphones in.  The LiveCD detected the speaker sound just fine, but when I performed the installation I was using headphones... is it possible this could have made for improper speaker detection?
I tried enabling pulseaudio.  Oddly, the Control Center was persistent in not letting me do so.  Could this be related?
Many thanks!  :)

Jaycee, I am experiencing the same problems as you PLUS the fact that I don't even get sound with my headphones! Completely dead. See my thread in General. For the past 3 or 4 days I have tried very hard with some help from these boards to find a fix but without success. I also tried to enable pulseaudio in CC but, like you, it won't stick. Before installing 2010 I was using Mandriva on this Samsung Q1 Tablet PC and had no sound issues whatsoever, everything worked perfectly. As I only use Q1 when I travel, I will wait a few more weeks updating Synaptic and hopefully something magical will happen and Mr. Audio shows up.  ;D

Same problem here. I have a HP TouchSmart IQ804t and I verified sound with headphones on installation and just didn't try it on the speakers (oversight). One of the kids tried something with sound today and it does not work on speaker but works fine on headphones. Sound adjusts fine with the keyboard controls so it does work, just not with speakers (built in on my machine).

If anyone has a solution it would be great to hear.

Well this WAS a problem for me to...

After reading about jaycee's problem I realized I too had audio from headphones jack only (before I thought I had no audio) So I went again looking for the obvious solutions and I found that the mixer was only displaying: Master, PCM and Headphone controls!!!

So I went to: Settings>Configure Channels

There I realized I could drag the options from one side to the other (that eluded me before!) so I simply moved the "Speaker" option to the right plane and pressed the "OK" button. There it was, way down... bastardized little thing needed proper adjustment, ALL THE WAY UP!

So there, this might be a solution for you and a bunch of others out there.

If this helps mark as Solved.

Unfortunately the speaker option is not available on the machine in question. My laptop with the 2010 install has speaker enabled in KMix and works fine, but when I open up KMix to add speaker (drag and drop from left column to right) it is not even an option. I'm not sure why but it appears others have this same problem. It must be something that is enabled/disabled during installation since they're installed from the same LiveCD. My laptop has an ATI video card (00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)) but  the computer with the problem has an nVidia card with Intel sound.

Thanks for the feedback. My problem still exists and appears to be deeper than KMix for some reason. As stated above, it works fine on headphones, volume controls work fine, etc. But no sound from internal speakers and there is no speaker option within KMix

As an update I have added Pulseaudio with various other Pulse options and I am unable to get the speaker option to appear in KMix or other mixers installed to see if it is something specific to KMix causing the problem. This is NOT a PCLOS specific problem as this happened in every distro I tried EXCEPT Mandriva 2010.

If anyone has suggestions on where to focus attention to enable the internal speakers please advise. Mandriva is using kernel 2.6.31 or 2.6.32...not sure which. But even when I upgraded PCLOS 2010 to 2.6.33 from the repos I still have no speaker sound or speaker option in KMix.

Just wanted to say that the post from iMoron helped solve my sound problem, having just installed PCLinuxOS 2010.

I also only had audio from headphones and very quiet, noisy sound from the speakers. The solution was to add the speakers onto the Kmixer since it was only displaying: Master, PCM and Headphone controls!  Why??

      [Settings>Configure Channels]

I dragged "Speaker" to the right panel, pressed the "OK", moved the slider up and voila  .... sound, finally!

Hope this helps. And a big THANK YOU! to iMoron.

Where Speaker is not an available channel and provides the solution, I would recommend to move all the available channels from left to the right. Put in a CD or start a stream and then move the sliders of all the channels up one by one and then mute and unmute them one by one.  I once got sound back on my desktop by muting some kind of digital/analog channel.

This one's come up again recently for my laptop with a recent upgrade (sometime in the last month or two). Sound always worked out of the box, but I normally have it muted so as not to disturb others in meetings. Today I tried to use it to listen to something and I've spent most of the afternoon trying to get it to work - alsaconf, driver changes, pulseaudio on and off etc. Finally I searched and found this old thread and...

I've never seen the speaker slider before, but evidently it's needed now!
