Screen Capture program for E17?
« on: April 21, 2010, 06:30:33 PM »
obviously there must be a way to do screenshots in E17 but I'll be darned if I can find it. Can someone tell me what I should use?

There are several ways. I will cover two. First way, using e17-supplied tools:

Left-click desktop, go to Settings > Modules. In the left pane, under the Shelf section, find and click on Screenshot module. Then click the big Load Module button at the bottom. Close the window. You can now add it to a shelf by right-clicking the shelf and selecting Set Shelf Contents. In the left pane, find and click on Screenshot module, then click Add Gadget button. To add the module to the desktop, left-click on the desktop, then select Settings > Gadgets. In the Gadgets Manager window, find Screenshot, click it, then click the Add Gadget button. It may end up in unpredictable places on your desktop. No problem. Right-click the Screenshot gadget on the desktop, select Begin move/resize this gadget, then drag it where you want it, and resize it if you want. To make it "stick", right-click on the Screenshot gadget again.

Before installing the 2010 e17 version, I was running e17 on top of PCLOS 2009.3 LXDE edition. I installed ksnapshot from the repos. If I remember correctly, there was only one dependency. It didn't want to bring the KDE base with it.

EDIT: The ksnapshot package isn't available separately in the KDE4 repository. So that method won't work any more.

There is MTPaint, also. It has a screenshot tool and is available in the repos.

shutter is one of the best screen capture i have ever used .... easy for the learner adn powerful for the advanced

I installed Shutter but couldn't get it to work in E17. Perhaps some configuration setting I'm not aware of?

OK, working on it. I need illustrations, like the page you're pointing to.

EDIT: Posted it there without illustrations. Shouldn't be needed. Someone find the navigator! I keep sailing in circles!

lou,

I've installed Shutter on e17, too. So far, the only functionality I've gotten from it is to be able to grab an area. Trying to grab the full screen gives me an error message that the keyboard can't be grabbed. The program only has two developers, and to file a bug, one has to use a Launchpad account. I'm going to file a bug report and see what happens.

Getting past the launchpad registration was a real trick. Hopefully, I'll hear something by tomorrow.

lou,

I got this today from one of the devs:

Mario Kemper (Romario) said :

I've installed PCLOS2010, e17 edition and can confirm this problem. Currently I have no clue why this is not working. I'll investigate further...

EDIT: I have since posted this to Mario on the Launchpad site:

"Mario, I am pretty sure this problem is peculiar to e17, maybe something in the enlightenment foundation libraries. I have since installed the same package, from the same repo, same distro, on an LXDE desktop. Shutter works there, as advertised. The first thing I did on LXDE was to test the full screen capture with Shutter. It produced a nice png."

Lou,

It's been a little while. The screenshot module for e17 works again, but Shutter still doesn't. I filed a bug report with the developer, and received this latest reply:

Quote
Mario Kemper (Romario)  said 10 hours ago:

@Darrel: Good and bad news.

The good news are that I've found out why this is not working with e17. Shutter is using libwnck (http://library.gnome.org/devel/libwnck/2.30/intro.html) which is not working correctly with e17. The error message "Keyboard could not be grabbed" is simply wrong here. I did not expect libwnck to fail -> this is a bug.

The bad news are that even if I try to work around the missing functionality some other parts of Shutter are not working correctly as well. This means a lot of work in the end. I'll see what I can do to fix the most important things as soon as possible.

Thanks for your patience.
Mario

Just thought you should know it hasn't been forgotten.
