Acer Travelmate 220
« on: April 21, 2010, 01:21:56 PM »
Firstly, I use PCLOS on my desktops, great, no problem. BUT I have tried with all desktop variations to boot up on the above  laptop. They all fail, usually by stopping when a selection box appears for the keyboard, no text is shown and it goes no further. With the 2010 version it gets to opening the desktop but as soon as I click anywhere the desktop crashes and I have to log in again. I have tried booting with all the various options like VESA, Safe settings, no APIC etc, etc. but that is the closest I get. The strange thing is that although it's a slightly elderly laptop, the latest MEPIS 8.5 works a treat the drawback being that their software repo is way behind ours in terms of being up to date. Any ideas lovely people?

Hi cjs1949,

Can you post back with your machine specs, especially the graphic card/chip you are using and the amount of ram you have, then the forum will be in a better position to help.

The LiveCD you use on the desktop is the same one for the Acer? If it/they are new burns have you done a media and/or md5sum check just to whittle down what could be causing it.....
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Hi,
Thanks for your offer of help , here's what I know about it.

1.33GHz Celeron
Intel 830MG chipset 8Mhz shared video memory
14" TFT 1024 x 768 display
768MHz RAM

I guess you need to know a bit  more than this but it's all I've managed to find out so far
