My HP webcam used to work in PCLinuxOS 2009 Gnome & KDE 4.3.4 after installing
dkms-uvcvideo
dkms-gspcav1

but now in wxCam asks to check the 'frame format' options in preferences
and none of the options works! ???
Installing  'dkms-sn9c20x' didn't help.
Any clue pl.?
It is a show stopper, luckily I am having my earlier PCLinuxOS on another partition.

Regards.

Check the .wxcam file and see what the differences are.  I found that in 2010 it did not change the frame format in the .wxcam file. I manually set it and save the file after that wxcam had no problems.

I am not able to find '.wxcam' file anywhere.

When run in terminal, the output is

Quote
[j@localhost ~]$ wxcam

V4L2_CID_GAMMA is not supported
V4L2_CID_SATURATION is not supported

Are you sure that you are looking for the .wxcam and not just wxcam?

This is what I see on my system

[dwmoar@localhost ~]$ ls -la .wxcam
lrwxrwxrwx 1 dwmoar dwmoar 21 2010-04-15 20:09 .wxcam

[dwmoar@localhost ~]$ pico .wxcam

Snapshot: /home/dwmoar/Desktop/image.tif

DriverAPI: Video4Linux2

Also make sure you have the file manager set to show hidden files.

@YouCanToo...
Very sorry.  .wxcam file is there,I might have searched for folder .wxcam in sleep!
Tried as per your guidelines, but the output is...
Code: [Select]
[j@localhost ~]$ ls -la .wxcam
-rw-rw-r-- 1 j j 424 2010-04-22 11:31 .wxcam
[j@localhost ~]$ pico .wxcam
bash: pico: command not found
[j@localhost ~]$

The .wxcam file contents are
Quote
AdjustColors: No
Negative: No
Upturned: No
Monochrome: No
Mirror: No
Blur: No
Deriche: No
Sharpen: No
Noise: No
Edge: No
DateTimeLabel: No
Opened: Yes
VideoStd: None
Frame_Rate: 15
Resolution: 176x144
Video: /home/j/Videos/wxcam vids/video.avi
Snapshot: /home/j/Videos/wxcam vids/image.tif
Device: /dev/video1
AudioDevice: /dev/dsp
Format: AUTO
DriverAPI: AUTO
Compression: none
Audio: Yes
Compression_Level: 50
Silence: 20

The frame rate field was blank earlier,I fed '15' and tried  few frame formats other than auto, but in vain.Running in terminal shows
Code: [Select]
[j@localhost ~]$ wxcam
Determining video4linux API version...
Using video4linux 2 API
V4L2_CID_CONTRAST is not supported
V4L2_CID_GAMMA is not supported
V4L2_CID_SATURATION is not supported
Determining pixel format...
pixel format: P207
Could not determine pixel format or pixel format not yet supported
Device not mapped

What does 'pixel format: P207
Could not determine pixel format or pixel format not yet supported
Device not mapped
'mean?

I haven't tried it on other distros but it works with M$. Some time ago I spent a lot of time on this one (these forums) and even contacted the manufacturer who confirmed that a driver for Linux was not available. If I'd known this to begin with I wouldn't have spent so much time trying to make it work.

Below is the reply I received from Creative Support in September last year:

Welcome to Creative Support Services; it is a pleasure to serve you.

Unfortunately, we do not provide support for the Linux operating system
as of yet. This is an issue we are seeking to address in the near
future. As such, we value your feedback in this matter. I have forwarded
this to the relevant department as well. Do be assured that you will be
informed if any drivers for Linux are developed. In the meantime, I
sincerely apologize for the inconvenience rendered to you due to the
lack of Linux drivers.

If you have any additional questions, comments or concerns, please
include them in your response and I will do my best to address them
promptly and accordingly.

Please retain all the previous correspondence when replying to this
email.

Edit. An extract from one of my emails:

We are very disappointed that a driver is not available for PCLinuxOS.
Are you aware that you could be losing business by not supporting Linux?
Or do you have some kind of agreement with Microsoft to boycott Linux?
Linux is steadily growing in popularity and if your products are
incompatible with distros your competitors will benefit. Regards.

>Riki,

from here:

Creative    215    0x041e    0x4053    Creative Live!Cam VideoIM       Vc301p    GC303    Yes    jpeg    spca5xx/LE gspca v4l1/v4l2

IIRC gspca is included in kernel since 2.26. or 2.27 on. And as you can see by the product  and vendor ID your webcam is not supported. Sorry. When possible, just buy a new one [go for HD. Maybe something like this] ;)
