Multi-Boot DVD? {PCLOS 2010 ALL ALL Multiboot LiveDVD}
« on: April 20, 2010, 09:03:54 PM »
Hi, Folks,

I was just playing around with the 2010 ISOs I've pulled down, and I noticed that all eight will fit on a single-layer DVD with a bit to spare.  Might it be possible to make a Live DVD with KDE and all the other respins so that a simple menu could live-boot any one of them?  Maybe I'm a bit off in the head, but I think such a thing would be neat.  (I just have no clue where to start...)

(This sort of disk would be perfect for local LUG installfests...)

Later On,
D

you should be able to make it yourself pretty easily..

start with any one of the iso's as the (installed) base, then install the other Desktop environments using the desired "task" package in synaptic (ie task-kde4..), when done run the command remasterme as root and test out the resulting iso in a virtual machine..   ..you should be able to select the DE you want to load from the options at the kdm/gdm log-in screen.

I could be wrong, but I think he's asking about having all the installable liveCD images on a single disk, so one could select which of those one would run, from the boot menu. The answer would be yes, but would entail a bit of renaming of the sqfs files and some edits to the isolinux stuff, or maybe the use of grub with the stage2_eltorito module.

JohnBoy would be the one to ask for details, as it would be similar to the multi-OS liveUSB sticks he's made, in structure.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Yup.  That's precisely what I'm wanting to learn how to do (similar to the multi-distro DVDs one might get with, say, Linux User & Developer magazine?).  I'll search for "multi-OS liveUSB" and see what I come up with.  Thanks!

That certainly looks to be a good place to start.  Thanks, folks! ;D

{Edit:}  Here's a link to the original web page for that Multi-Boot DVD text file in the earlier thread:

http://pcquest.ciol.com/content/enterprise/2005/105070101.asp

(Just 'cause it has all the pretty pictures...)

As I dig around the web I'm finding, as usual, there's ninety million ways to skin a cat, just no way in @#$! to make him like it...

{EDIT}  Found this knocking around on the Linux For You website.  It seems to be well written, and I'm going through it now to see if I can apply this method to the task at hand.  I expect, given my lack of free time and my general thick-headedness lately that it will take me a while to get this.  When I do come up with something, I will probaby put it up on a torrent or offer it as a candidate for download via pclinuxos.com, if there is any interest.
