does Thunderbird 3.04 download new mail on start{solved}
« on: April 20, 2010, 06:25:16 PM »
i just installed PCLinuxOS xfce 2010 and i can't get thunderbird to download new mail on startup. I have to start the program and then download manually.  I have checked the appropriate preference items and advanced settings and also reinstalled with synaptic. before i start reinstalling and all that, could someone confirm that this function works?

My experience has been that if Thunderbird is configured, with your email stuff, it downloads new mail on start up.

Are you using an ISP for email like Roadrunner.com or is it something like Gmail or Yahoo?

On the menu bar... Edit->Account Settings->Server Settings.  There's a checkbox to check for new messages on startup.

Hope that helps.  :)

No worries Rudge.  I have to assume it has been done already based on what was posted.  Just checking is all.  You still have your shot a being the troubleshooting hero.   ;D

joble - yes - i checked that account setting.

rudge - i connect to a hosted domain.  my ISP is not the hosting service. this was not a problem with TBird 2.X and i can get the mail but not automatically on startup. i suspect the problem is related to the new setup "wizard" and the fact that my e-mail - name@domain.com- doesn't match the server - pop.differentdomain.com. The new "wizard" automatically creates a non-existent pop3 server and won't let me edit it. i finally found a way to create an account manually that works an all respects except the one i started this thread about. Perhaps TBird is going to the nonexistent server on startup and timing out?

I am going to trash my .thunderbird file tomorrow and and start over. i have an idea for fooling the "wizard" if i can't set it up manually.

I am using gmail and it updates when I start it. If I had an ISP account I could test it, but I don't. Someone else will have to step in here.

Thar be gremlins in my computer  ::)

It works now. I trashed the .thunderbird file, completely removed Tbird with synaptic and then reinstalled it. My first attempt to set up my mail had the same result. I noticed that Tbird immediately checked the mail and reported no mail on server (which i knew to be wrong) but then found and downloaded the mail when i clicked the get mail button. So i trashed the .thunderbird file again and started over and manually configured as soon as i had that option. this time it worked.

Thanx to all who responded
