"Unread posts since last visit" where have they gone?

Recently, while I'm digging around the forum, I suddenly find that the "unread posts" selection drops from being umpteen pages to maybe 6 - or even none!
This might not be of earth-shaking importance, but I'm addicted to the forum and I NEED those posts!
What's going on? Is someone trying (successfully??) to drive me mad??

Unread post are fine for me.  I regularly check in several times a day.  If I haven't checked for the best part of a day I get 6 or 7 new pages.

Today I was on about 6 hours ago and there are 3 new pages since then. I mark them as read after I've looked through them, so as I don't end up with lots of pages.

Earlier there were some posts going in the beta testing section which is closed and no longer available to be seen. I moved quite a few posts from that area into their respective areas on the main forum.
