Then I get to this prompt but I don't know what to try, if I 'exit' I end up with screen like the last pic. This seems to be where I end up no matter what choice I make in the boot options. What/how do I need to edit??

Interestingly I get similar problems trying to use Yoper...

In your first screenshot at the bottom of the screen you have a text box labeled "boot options"; by defualt it is hidden, but it becomes displayed when you access the menus as shown in the image.

After getting this box to display, select the first PCLOS boot option with the arrow keys, and then delete everything in the boot options box after splash=

Now modify this line so that it says:

Code: [Select]
splash=verbose  3
..and press the enter key and let it boot.   If all goes well you will get to a text login prompt and you can try the directions in my earlier post.  Otherwise, post back and let me know what happens (screenshots are helpful!  ;) )

EDIT:

that last screen shot shows the single user console mode (init 1)..  no login needed.  from that prompt, try entering

Code: [Select]
init 6
..to reboot cleanly, and repeat the steps above.  What seems to happen for me is that udev seems to pick up a little more hardware with each clean reboot (..and throws out previous hardware detection with unclean reboots / hard resets).   ..in order to avoid having to hard reset the machine we use the limited init level 1 or 3 boot sequence followed by init 6 to restart untill hardware is properly detected.

Once we have good basic hardware detection we can (hopefully) boot normally (..or at least begin to work on video config, etc)

Can only get to console mode via safeboot option, tried a few 'init 6' reboots and tried to change the boot options (can only do via text based grub) still getting back to the crashed graphics card scenario....

Determined to get past this

It sounds like udev is not what is holding you back at this point, but more just getting proper video driver setup.  Try the following:

Boot to console and run the command "video" or "XFdrake" (they both do the same), follow the prompts, and when completed, run the command "init 5" to try and proceed into graphical mode.

Thank you so much for your help. Still got some video driver/settings config play around to do but I can at last boot up.

I'll post back when I've had a play!

Good to hear!   Let us know if you run into any other issues, and welcome to PCLinuxOS!

Printers are set up through the PCLinuxOS Control Center (PCC) in the hardware section.  ..it shows up in the PC menu under the listing "Configure Your Computer" under both "Favorites" and "More applications > Configuration".

If you don't see the option there, it is probably because you are running one of the liveCD's that does not come with that package pre-installed.  I believe there is a package named printerdrake that should install all you need and make it available in PCC.

As far as other programs, what specifically are you looking for?  Some software in Synaptic are command-line only applications, others are just libraries of code used by other applications; both of these will not show up in your menu.

If you are using KDE4 you can use alt-F2 to open a sort of "smart" run dialog box at the top of your screen (krunner)..  often typing the first few letters of what you want will bring up the application / document / web bookmark, etc that you are looking for.  I personally find this much quicker than browsing through menus.

You can also get the same sort of functionality directly in the menu by using the "kick-off" style PC menu (this is done by right clicking on the PC icon and selecting it from the options)

Don't suppose you know where I might find a PDD for Canon MP600R?

Hi, quasarman,

Your Canon all-in-one unit does not appear to be listed in the Open Printing Database (unless I somehow missed it):

http://www.openprinting.org/printers/manufacturer/Canon

Canon does not have much of a track record for Linux support, so it might be a struggle to get this working. But there are a couple of forum threads about Pixma all-in-one printers (although different models than yours) and with some luck, you'll see something helpful there:
