How to get Synaptiks (KDE 4 Touchpad configuation) to work
« on: April 19, 2010, 07:19:16 PM »
To get Synaptiks to work, install from the repository, and (easy way)restart your computer. The configuration is under, Configure your desktop, Computer Administration, Keyboard & Mouse, and a new entry "Touchpad". You need to start the daemon or restart the computer before you configure the touchpad or you will get a warning that the daemon is not running. Just what I needed. I'm to clumsy to use a USB mouse, keyboard and a touchpad at the same time! Thanks Tex and Gang for getting this on Synaptic PM.

Thank you.  I followed your instructions and I can now control my touch pad.  I had previously tried to use qsynaptics, and that did not work at all.

And how does one start the daemon...  Even after computer restarts, this is a no-go for me...

With KDE4 the the configuration tool is now in: Configure your desktop, System Administration, Lost and Found, Touchpad. To see if it installed and running look in: Configure your desktop, System Administration, Startup and Shutdown, Service Manager. In the window on the lower right side ( Startup Services ) scroll down and see if synaptics is listed and if it running. If it is not running, check the box and start it. If is not there I would try reinstalling it from the Package Manager. Sorry I couldn't help more, I know just enough to get in trouble. jd

Thanks for that.  Do you mean though I should look for "synaptics" in services, or "synaptiks"??  At any rate, neither are shown in system services, so maybe I have to do some more configuring of hal daemon, xorg.conf, and fdi files.

If you didn't already know, it seems like some things (ie: device properties and settings) are getting moved from their past native position inside the xorg.conf file and are being farmed out to .fdi files.  (Seems like a similar concept to grub 2.  Now instead of having all your information in the menu.lst file, different installations' boot information is getting farmed out to other files.)

Here is some interesting stuff about the touchpads mentioning fdi files:
