Video and audio Still skipping like a Broken Record
« on: April 19, 2010, 02:17:34 PM »
Hello

This is a recurring problem even After this thread

I have since (gasp!! did the unmentionable) And reinstalled the KDE 3.5 2009.2 using youcantoo frozen repo and since I'd have notice a lot of problems have been solved like the PCC is now working also I can play DVDs again and I can burn Dual layered DVDs again and  Skype is working again as in that part where i can let the other party listen to whatever Im playing at the time.

Now since then I have also read up on the artsd and that seems to be an issue and and the type of Video card may have contribute to some of these problems.

So Now here is the problem If I leave my computer on for a certain period I relive the Rap video thing with the exception of smplayer Vlc and the rest of the xine based players go into skipping mode and then my computer starts really lagging  and Thanks T6 for earlier mentioning the top  command.  It allowed me to see why it was lagging my artsd usage was way high. and couple with that i lose sound on everything and Yes i have setup a  second account and it too has the same Issues.  I have applied some of the things I have learned from earlier Like

delete the xine.config file doesn't work

I have installed the very current video driver for my card

this is the current modprob.conf file

Quote
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe ehci_hcd; /sbin/modprobe uhci_hcd; /bin/true
blacklist audio
blacklist snd-usb-audio
alias sound-slot-1 snd_cmipci
alias sound-slot-0 snd_hda_intel
options snd_hda_intel index=1
alias eth0 r8169
install scsi_hostadapter /sbin/modprobe pata_via; /sbin/modprobe sata_via; /bin/true
alias net-pf-1 unix
alias net-pf-2 ipv4
alias net-pf-3 ax25
alias net-pf-4 ipx
alias net-pf-5 appletalk
alias net-pf-6 netrom
alias net-pf-7 bridge
alias net-pf-8 atm
alias net-pf-9 x25
alias net-pf-11 rose
alias net-pf-12 decnet
alias ipv6 off
alias net-pf-15 af_key
alias net-pf-16 af_netlink
alias net-pf-17 af_packet
alias net-pf-19 af_econet
alias net-pf-20 atm
alias net-pf-23 irda
alias net-pf-24 pppoe
alias net-pf-25 wanrouter
alias net-pf-26 llc
alias net-pf-31 bluetooth
alias eth1394 off

alias eth1395 ndiswrapper
alias pci:v000010ECd00008169sv00001462sd0000702Cbc02sc00i00 r8169

which I have researched from this this thread
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,66982.0.html

and when i looked into artsd usage issue this topic came up

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,62968.0.html and since i have a different hardware.

The only saving grace is when i have these problems If i do a complete reboot they Go away for a time  and Yes I am very aware of the new kde4 but I am not very comfortable with it yet.  :-\

Thank you very much

I had problems with audio skipping on one of my machines, installing the 2.6.32 kernel resolved the issue. It's just a suggestion but it might be worth a try.

the latest kernel in repos is 2.6.33.2, avaialble for pclinux 2010 kde4 final

do you have a intel or amd cpu?   try a64 kernel if you have amd cpu

also you didn't mention what audio driver are you using with that sound card

sometimes video cards can produce this situations

i had weird problems some years ago in mandriva while doing overclocking, could this be the case?

Hey T6
seems like old times lol

I am using the AMD my specs still on the bottom of the page  lol but as for the driver isn't it listed in the modprob.conf file??

the driver Im using is  ‎snd_cmipci hopes that correct

Not doing the the switch to KDE 4 yet until I feel more at ease I waited until 2009.2 to switch to from 2007 lol

also just tried to find that kernel it was for Emulation only if i read it right

"I am using the AMD my specs still on the bottom of the page  lol"

no lol, when you write a reply you can't see that information on the bottom of each person and since there is a very little amount of users using it, i usually ignore it

do you have a optional driver for that soundcard?  have you used alsaconf as root in konsole?

my current soundcard works always without my intervention but older soundcards i had required to select the right driver if there was more than one

about overclocking, are you using it?

"Not doing the the switch to KDE 4 yet until I feel more at ease I waited until 2009.2 to switch to from 2007 lol"

does that mean that you are using 2009.2 updated to kde 4.3.4?  i'm sorry, i am on kde 4.4.2 with the latest kernel, i didn't knew that the kernel i mentioned is available for the old version of the distro, that now is abandoned and almost unsupported

well there is an alternative mentioned called ‎cmpci for the soundcard and

No overclocking here not even on my video card but as for using ,alsaconf during root Konsole, i might try that, but the thing i really want commented on is the modprob.conf file.  As I forgot to mention earlier that this also affects sound on websites like youtube

do you have a video card with hdmi?  there was a post made by Texstar that mentioned a fix for that situation, the video card with hdmi has a internal bridge for the audio and can give problems, even on windows xp

Ok its starting again went to konsole tried these commands artscontrol and artsd these are the results

Quote
artscontrol
Error: "/home/zack/.kde/socket-localhost" points to "/tmp/ksocket-zack" instead of "/home/zack/tmp/ksocket-zack".

Link points to "/tmp/ksocket-zack"
Error: "/home/zack/.kde/socket-localhost" points to "/tmp/ksocket-zack" instead of "/home/zack/tmp/ksocket-zack".
Creating link /home/zack/.kde/socket-localhost.
Created link from "/home/zack/.kde/socket-localhost" to "/home/zack/tmp/ksocket-zack"
[zack@localhost ~]$ artsd
can't register Arts::MidiManager
There are already artsd objects registered, looking if they are active...

Error: Can't add object reference (probably artsd is already running).
If you are sure it is not already running, remove the relevant files:

       /home/zack/tmp/ksocket-zack/Arts_SoundServerV2
       /home/zack/tmp/ksocket-zack/Arts_SoundServer
       /home/zack/tmp/ksocket-zack/Arts_SimpleSoundServer
       /home/zack/tmp/ksocket-zack/Arts_PlayObjectFactory
       /home/zack/tmp/ksocket-zack/Arts_AudioManager

OK hope this helps to give a clearer picture on whats happening

Have you tried shutting off all the extras in the bios? network, wireless, webcam, power management, etc
and then running from a live CD using boot arguments to start without acpi, ioapic and apic?

Also, in kde 3.5, I never have the soundsystem enabled. Audio players, video players, web browsers
and recording software don't need it.  kde4 is terrible. It will the first thing to go, if I stick with pclos 2010.
Make sure you hoard all the good rpms, having them at your disposal secures part of the future  ;)

The thing is when i did run it off the cd it couldn't find a volume group so i had to manually make it go to my sound  card
