(Fixed-somewhat) Music CD play is a no-show in 4
« on: April 19, 2010, 01:13:28 PM »
Anyone else having a problem playing standard wav music cd's in KDE4?  None of the sound apps included with the iso; KsCD, Amarok, SMPlayer will play the discs for me.  I've just updated KsCD, hoping that would help, but still no go.

I installed VLC from the repo, and it works just fine.  Also plays fine on my old discarded Win XP box.  So for me, all the above are broken.

I've also noticed that Amarok won't open when choosing it from an mp3 file context menu. (open with).

Yes I can confirm this also. The only thing I can play when using Amarok to open a mp3 file.  None of the sound apps included SMPlayer or vlc etc.... will play the discs for me. Also no sound when playing a DVD movie. droopy

Sure glad to know I'm not the only one, sleepy & droopy.  Something is awry with media in this new KDE iteration.
All the apps I mentioned are operational in 3.5.
Can anyone imagine Redmond releasing a DE that wouldn't play CD's?  I could hear the screams from here and I'm in a remote location.

And I want to stress, it's not the ripper gang's problem...it's a KDE problem.
We should be bombarding them with the issues.
And I'm sure I know what their response would be..

Your distro hasn't packaged our finest properly.

My hats off to Tex and the others who have created the best distro on the planet.
If they had a solid environment to work with, can you imagine what the product would be!
It blows my mind!

SMPlayer will play a music CD, I just tested this out after reading this thread and it worked fine.

This probably not what you want to hear but, I had never thought of using smplayer to play an audio cd before. So I tried it.
I am delighted to report that it worked. No grumbling or complaining from the software.

Prior to playing the audio cd I had just, because this is a fresh install, downloaded win32-codecs-all; lame and xine-ui. I doubt if the latter would make much difference to you.

I don't have vlc which would be an obvious choice to run an audio or video cd/dvd without codecs - but you already say it works.

Amarok fell over after the first track - but it played!
KsCD - can't comment.

In Smplayer I did this - having no preconceptions - gui menu>Open>Audio Cd and there were the tracks.

I hope this gives you some comfort that perhaps a minor issue is keeping you from full enjoyment of your Audio CDs.

Good luck.

Amarok would not launch when I had the music CD in the drive.... KsCD could not even recognize the CD. SMPlayer worked perfectly, the song titles showed up and the songs played just fine.

It's a mixed bag.  Some do, some don't, some with a little persuasion.  It's just not a stable environment.

Well for me I have one cd/dvd player installed and kscd works just fine. I suspect if you have more than one cd drive you probably would want to configure KDE 4 to point to the correct device. Mine is set to /dev/cdrom which is linked to /dev/sr0.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Thank you, Tex.
I opened KCC and see the same setup you have.
/dev/cdrom...error correction etc.
I have one cdrom and one cd/dvd combo.
All the aforementioned apps perform well in 3.5.
Which leads me to think something is missing in 4.
And it certainly could be my hardware or a lame user. LOL.
Again, thanks for taking your time to respond.

I just have the one drive and KDE 4 has the correct path for the drive. SMPlayer works fine though and I am perfectly happy using it to play music CDs.  ;D

you need to make a symbolic link from /dev/sr0  (Sr1 in my case) to /dev/cdrom then kscd works fine.
Still having a problem with Amarok though.

I've install gxine and use that for audio cd's Just like it myself.

hope this helps

Thanks, Dave.
Would you be kind enough to explain creating a symbolic link from /dev/sr0 to /dev/cdrom?  And what is a /dev/sr0?

All of the above work right out of the box on my computer (KDE4 final).
My favorite for playing CD's is Audacious2 (it's in the repos) Has a very
good equalizer that works as well.  Uses WinAmp skins and I have had
absolutely no problems with it.  Much superior to XMMS which is no longer
under development as far as I know.  I use Amarok for playing mp3 streams
from the internet (internet radio) Shoutcast, etc.  Audacious has a much
more complete set of controls than KsCD and a really sharp interface.

Try it and make sure you install the accompanying plugins, skins and codecs
when you do the install.
You gotta have balls to play golf.
