The sage continues - with OGMRip not seeing the DVD drive I though I would give dvd::rip a try - well it does see the drive as does k3b.   So was checking the online documentation for ogmrip and noticed that it indicated I could reference the device from the command line "Source Selection

To select the source, click on the "Load" button to show the DVD Selection dialog. Then, either select a DVD-Video from the list or browse for a DVD structure or an ISO image. If you want to encode a disc that is not yet in the drive, you can click on the "Eject" button. Once you've made your choice, click on the "Load" button and the DVD will be loaded.

It is also possible to specify a device, a directory or an ISO image directely on the command line:

$ ogmrip image.iso " so gave it a try and this is the output I received:

The "missing" I assume are just warnings and should not affect the program but the "warning" is the one that I am wondering if it might be affecting the recognition of the drive.  Don't know if I shooting in the dark or not!!

search through Synaptic for  ogm   and make sure you have all the plugins installed.

Searched through Synaptic and loaded any of the ogm plugins not already installed - did not make any difference in that ogmrip still does not see the DVD drive.  Have since loaded AcidRip (confusing interface), HandBrake and VLC - all of them recognize and read the drive so clearly it is an issue with the Brasero/Ogmrip configurations.  The best results I haved for ripping is the Ogmrip application so would really like to have it recognize the DVD drive.  K3b will do the rip but I find the result to be choppy, AcidRip and noted is confusing, HandBrake another confusing application, VLC - its still running - how do you know when it is done?

Sorry JohnBoy - I use the GUI interface all the time and forgot to go back to the command line and give it a try.  Results were indeed different after adding the plugins (See below).  The drive was actually read and the main movie found!!  Unfortunately, in the GUI, it still doesn't see the drive but making progress now.  Would you know what in the config of the GUI would need to be fixed so it too would see the drive.  Otherwise, I'll use the command line until then.

I have never used this app previously but installed it ........  9 packages in all .......  please ensure you have all of them installed.

In a terminal I typed

ogmrip    <enter>

and that brought up the GUI interface. It also reported that I had some problem with /tmp permissions .....  but that is beside the point.

I inserted a DVD into my second optical player, and tried to get the GUI to see it ......

Pressed Load, and that gave me a little window but the DVD was not listed in the drop-down box.
Strangely, with me clicking the mouse in all parts of that wee window the DVD showed up.

I shut down Ogmrip, and changed the media to a different drive, fired up Ogmrip again and met something similar ----  a delay in recognising the media.

So my questions now would be

do you have all packages installed (9)?
did you give the system time to try to recognise the media? .....  leave it a while and click around the little window to see if anything happens.

Also .......  try different media .....  audio CDs, and several different DVDs to see if there is any change.

I checked re the ogm packages installed and yes, there were nine - noticed a tenth - the development library so just for good measure checked it off for installation as well so all ogm modules are installed.  Put in the DVD and waited for the system to say it had been loaded then started up ogmrip from the PC menu.  After clicking "Load", the dialog box came up saying no dvd device - used the suggestion of clicking around in the box - but again nothing.  Shut down ogmrip and started up a konsole session and started ogmrip from the command line (no options) - again the same affect.  Click "Load" told no device and even clicking around the box it still did not see it.  Shutdown ogmrip and then used the command line "ogmrip /dev/dvd" and when I clicked on Load, the DVD was read.  Tried it again from the command line, this time using the command "/dev/sr0" and again was able to read the DVD.

Reads as if the config file file for ogmrip is missing the device spec or has an incorrect one.

Not at that PC at the moment so cannot check here .... I had a quick look yesterday but did not see where that might be specified.

Maybe you will have better luck .....
