[SOLVED] KDE CC Slowness
« on: April 19, 2010, 07:54:36 AM »
Reported to me from a friend after installing and updating 2010 KDE .....

In KDE CC making selections in the left panel gets no response for many seconds, whereas on my test rig, with similar hardware the response is almost immediate for everything. He has a better graphics card .....  Nvidia 9800 GTX+ with 512MB DDR3

He tried rasterblaster to see if it might help but no go.

The slow response is not apparent (at least as yet) in other apps or utilities.

Anyone got any ideas that might help him sort this?

Other than reinstalling I have no idea ....  and I think he tried that already.

Suggestions?

I don't have a solution but I am tracking down a problem that leads me to this being the situation for me as well... or it's something to do with Virtualbox.  I tried switching video drivers with no luck and turning off #D desktop effects too, again no luck. But those are things you might suggest to him.

Virtual box has it's own virtual video card, so your normal drivers don't do anything. You need to use the VBox driver.

In my friend's case it is a standard install.

His Glxgears output is as he would expect.

No 3D effects ........  but that may be some indication of the problem ........  apparently he cannot choose 3D effects .......  will have to get further/more exact info today ........ will also try an install of Minime today and upgrade that with tasks-kde-whatever to standard KDE

.....  there just may be something the matter with his ISO or CD -- although it passes media test after burning & the MD5sum is correct.

..... trying Minime today should resolve that question ......

At the moment, my MiniMe uptime is 26 hours 3 minutes, on the machine that crashed, on average, every 45 minutes with the betas. Everything has been running very smoothly during that time; no hiccups at all. I'm using the 2.6.33.2-pclos1.bfs kernel. Effects are turned on.

Biggest complaint I have is the KsCD GUI is buffalo butt ugly. Two ice picks in both eyes couldn't erase the horror of that image. You really can't unsee that which has been seen. Lordy... I've tried.

I had the same problem. I also had a problem with overall slowness--slow resizing of windows, slow clunky feel in moving windows, etc. I tried the rasterblaster solution for that and had no luck, disabled desktop effects, and had latest nvidia drivers. My computer isn't slow, either. Also, my install looked nothing like the livecd--taskbar looked different, no icons on it, only kicker menu, etc. I deleted .kde before install, which should have removed previous settings. This isn't too much of a problem, I can change that easily, but it's still annoying. Overall, KDE 4 has just been a terrible experience for me. I read all these praises of it, maybe it's just me, but it seems like a case of the emperor wearing no clothes. I may have to switch to the gnome version if some solutions to these problems don't pop up.

Problem has been resolved!  Almost forgot to update this thread.

Apparently the incorrect video driver was automatically chosen (nvidia) ...... maybe the card was not in the database? ......

Changing the driver did the trick.
