<Solved> Can't change Window Switcher
« on: April 19, 2010, 07:03:01 AM »
I have always used the cover switch (or was it the flipswitch?) in KDE 4 but in 4.4.2 I can't get it to work. I just get a vertical box switch instead.

I have tried naming ~/.kde4 but that made no difference.

Same thing here - tried all sorts of options, even set up a new account to test it, but no dice.

KDE 4.4.3 will probably be the answer  ::)

Hi guys,

I don't know if this was ever answered properly, but I finally found the (easy) answer after checking the KDE forums:

Desktop effects -> General Effect for window switching -> <your choice>

It defaults to no effect, which result in the vertical box and no flips or galleries or such.

Hope this helps (if it's not already been solved...)

Torsten

This doesn't work for me.

<RANT>

This is what I hate about KDE4.  There are so many different ways of doing anything, and what applies one place doesn't work in another, altho it seems that what you are trying to do is allowed, but then it doesn't work. Then there is the law of unintended consequences, what you just did screws something else up and you don't realize it for a while, then you screw something else up trying to fix the first screw up, the before you know it EVERYTHING is screwed up.  And just doing away with desktop effects,  doesn't get things back to SIMPLE.

Right now my desktop has no ability to have different wallpapers on different desktops, yet different activities is checked, which always enabled different wallpapers before.

On my desktop, I can grab a white space and drag the wallpaper around, showing other wallpapers that I have used.  telling it to scale, scale cropped, etc has no effect on this, tho I thought it did at one time.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Desktop effects can be enabled in two places, in "configure your computer" and
'configure your desktop:"  After I disabled "compiz-fusion" in configure you computer, I can have different wallpapers again.  I have also disabled all desktop effects under "configure your desktop"

Having this in two places just is asking for trouble, and I found it.  Desktop effects on by default is just asking newbies to  pull their hair out.

That's because they're two different sets of 3D effects from two different sources. The ones in "Configure your Computer" (aka the PCC) are from Compiz and can be used with all desktops. The ones in "Configure your Desktop" are part of KDE 4.

Trying to run both at the same time is likely to be disastrous, but Linux is about choice and it is up to the user to choose the one they want.

@Tommy,

You haven't discovered any problem yet, or else the problems I have are specific to my video card, setup, etc, etc.  I have noticed that any anomalies that I have, go away when I restart the X server (Ctl-Alt-Bksc) But I have now avoided using "configure your computer"  (No desktop effects) and strictly use "configure your desktop."

Logically I guess it makes a lot of sense that we shouldn't use two different methods of setting up our display.  And it's also logically to restart X, when you have made a change in some setting, so that everything gets set into concrete.

Of course, I'm a tinkerer, and that always is a recipe for disaster when you don't really know what you're doing!

I just learn by my mistakes, usually too late.  ::) ::) ::) ::)
