Cannot access some web sites, (SOLVED)
« on: April 19, 2010, 03:53:14 AM »
This is a weird one.

I have a new install of PClinuxOS2010

Firefox and Konqueror access most web sites most of the time. NIC is on a DHCP setting.

Certain web sites cannot be found, even though using a different machine on the same network will resolve and access that site (eg www.hsbc.co.uk cannot be found)

Not sure where to look for an intermittent DNS failure for certain sites.

Phil

(Even searching and accessing via google gets nowhere)

Change your DNS server to something else.

I'm having similar problems. Lot's of time with looking up x.yz.com in the status bar. Thought maybe my DSL modem was training at a slow speed so I power cycled the modem and rebooted. Still lots of 'stalls' loading pages.

I was using Goggle DNS and switched back to AT&T servers (via) DHCP. Seems better but still not great.

I think next for me is trying disabling IPv6 just as a shot in the dark.

I have changed IP to a fixed addy on internal network, ditched DHCP, nameservers added.

With this machine I cannot access certain websites, like HSBC. On other machines on the same network its not an issue.

Its something else.....

Firefox can't find the server at www.hsbc.co.uk.

That should be a given.

Go nowhere.

Tried disabling IPv6 and anything else.

It is resolving from the trace, but it is not displaying certain web sites. This applies to both firefox and to konqueror.

I cant think what this might be down to, something in 2010 and not in 2009 (which will display that site)

Very puzzled,

Phil

Have you tried clearing your cache / cookies etc.

Not being able to go to hsbc would worry me slightly (being a bank) but as it's happening to other sites as well,,,,,,,,,,,

Have you tried creating a new FFox profile (command "firefox -P" ) and seeing if that works?

PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

SOLUTION, it works....

 IPv6

By default, Firefox/Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey will use IPv6 ("Internet Protocol version 6") if it is available. However, the user's local network or Internet environment may not be equipped to handle IPv6 and you may see an "Address not found" or "Server not found" error for many websites. (Read bug 414197 and this forum discussion for examples.)

From: MozillaZine
Error loading websites

To disable IPv6, change the preference network.dns.disableIPv6 from "false" to true . Here are the steps:

   1. Type about:config in the address bar, press Enter.
   2. Find network.dns.disableIPv6 in the list.
   3. Right-click -> Toggle.
   4. Restart your Mozilla application and try again.

If this doesn't work, you can re-enable IPv6 by resetting the preference to "false" (double-click to toggle).
