How to make a live usb of LXDE 2010?
« on: April 20, 2010, 07:05:18 PM »
Thought I'd try LXDE on my new Dell mini netbook.  At the moment I'm running KDE3.5 which I was able to install via a live usb made directly from the live CD.  All done easily from the desktop.

This option does not seem to be available from the 2010 live CD of LXDE.  Since netbooks do not generally have CD readers this seems to be a curious omission - perhaps there's another way?

Working on it.  Else try the tutorial from JohnBoy.  That still works for me, without persistence.

I don't mind about the persistence as long as I can install it onto my netbook.

since you have kde3.5 you can easily make a liveusb  from the lxde ISO ....just format the stick fat32 then go to make LiveUSB in your menu and make the loop file 100mb navigate to your lxde ISO ..easily done just follow the prompts ..only problem is when you shut down/reboot from the liveusb it hangs at the end..manually shut down with the power button..

I make liveusb's like this all the time and it works every time ..

Thanks scoundrel, it all seemed to be going well, but it crashed with the error message "can't stat "/mnt/loop/livecd.sqfs"  What have I got wrong?

Afterwards I checked /mnt/loop/ - it's empty.

how big is the stick ??  or fat32 partition ?  try again with a 200mb loop ..make sure you format to fat32 in PCC--local disc before every test . .

Posting this from LXDE running on a live usb on my Dell mini.

I did a cludge, it looked to me as though the boot folder was OK and the others were empty, so using another computer with a CD reader I copied over the contents of isolinux and the livecd.sqfs from the live CD.  It works, so there was nothing wrong with my USB stick.   It still had the manufacter's windows format, and I checked that it was a bootable, fat32, 2.8 MiB partition before attempting this.

As far as I can see the loop size determines the size of the livedcd-rw file.

Still doesn't explain the crash though.  I remember having a similar problem with makeliveusb before with 2009.2, I had to do that from the liveCD.

I sorta have similar dingy with you.

Just couple of days ago I wanted to install ZenMini on this PC#3 with no cd/dvd drive. What I did was insert a 4GB thumbdrive on PC#1, bootup to ZenMini cd and install to 4GB thumbdrive (it auto-install this as EXT4). Rebooted and boot up ZenMini via 4GB thumbdrive (works).

Next.. I moved the 4GB thumbdrive to PC#3 and tried booting it - I only encounter a tiny problem ( this one got ATI 3400HD, the other one got Nvidia GTX260). It auto-fix the video driver by just me hitting <enter> few times... and few seconds later.. I'm IN ! :)  It auto-detected everything (the harddrive partitions on this PC#3, the network card on this PC, etc)

Then just last night.. I used GHOST4Linux (bootable cd) to clone the usb 4GB thumbdrive (ext4) to this PC's 40GB pata drive :)

Maybe you can try the same !
