Onboard mic not working (SOLVED with USB soundcard dongle)
« on: April 18, 2010, 05:27:46 AM »
Hi all,

I am having problems with the onboard microphone not working. Sound output is fine, mic plug is into the correct place, fiddled with Kmix, not muted, mic on, levels up. No program using the mic will recognise it (in Audacity mic is greyed out).

Installation is a new machine with PClinuxOS2010 final, fully updated.

Done a search on the forum and tried everything.

Any suggestions welcome,

Phil

Mic is in a headset which works on the other PClinux2009 machine.

arecord -l | grep card
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog]

aumix -q
vol 80, 80
line 80, 80
mic 77, 77
pcm2 79, 79
igain 77, 77
dig1 100, 100

PCC

Here you can select an alternative driver (either OSS or ALSA) for your sound
card (ATI Technologies Inc|RS780 Azalia controller).

Your card currently use the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver
(default driver for your card is "snd_hda_intel")

I have done some research and it looks as if the onboard sound card is a problem, lots of people have had problems with sound, although nothing on the mic issue.

I assume it is a driver issue and as one person noted its an ATI device using and Intel driver....(upstream issue?)

Attached is my kmix screen, looks ok to me.

My solution is to buy a USD sound dongle to get the skype mic input working, and in due course may buy a sound card and disable the ATI onboard card.

This is my second onboard sound card failure, the former being a SiS card.

USB Sound Card dongle arrived, plugged in, KMix crashes, restart KMix which shows dongle, fiddle with skype setting, successful test, simple solution.

On Audacity changed the device, it works....
