Sony Vaio PCG K33 wireless problems w / Minime 2010
« on: April 17, 2010, 09:15:09 AM »
Well, finally got this thing installed and running from the hd.  It now has task-management and the printer utils as well as OOo.  i had to download all the above through Ethernet connection because previous installs would freeze the compu when i tried to set up Wireless.

After installing all needed programs and updating through Synaptic i tried wireless again.  While booting it just freezes the computer.  If i turn off wireless with the switch on the front of the laptop and plug my Ethernet back in, it recognizes it very well and brings it up just fine.

With wireless enabled i cannot even boot into the desktop.  Any ideas?

Have a great morning and congrats to all who worked on this great distro!  :)

frazelle09, what's the wireless chipset?

I have a fairly new Ralink chipset (some newer rt2870 driver version) myself and had to download the 2.6.33 kernel before installing 2010, then installing it right away after install, because the driver in 2.6.32 not only doesn't work but it lets the router "hang" so that I have to reset it before getting online.

Maybe this'll be helpful in some way...

Hello frazelle09.

I have Minime 2010 installed on my Sony VAIO VGN-FZ25 and it recognizes my wireless as ‎Intel Corp. PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection. I was able to easily set it up with the Configure Network to connect to a Netgear WGR614 Router. I had no problem using kernel 2.6.32.11-pclos2.bfs and had since upgraded to 2.6.33.2-pclos1.bfs.

Regards and good luck.

Hi guys, thanks for replying.  The chipset is an Atheros AR5001X.  i guess i'll try upgrading to the .33 kernel and see if it works better.

Have a great evening!  :)

Well, it looks like we need to go to Plan B.  i installed the .33 kernel and it still has the same problem.  If the wireless is turned on when the system boots, it freezes.  If i just push the wireless button on the front of the laptop and turn the wireless off, the boot up continues and i can connect the Ethernet cable and the computer connects just fine.

Anything else you might think of?  Have a great evening!  :)

Am now able to boot with wireless turned off and Ethernet connected and turn on wireless by first turning on wireless by using the switch on the front of the compu and then going into Control Center, Manage System settings, and Starting wlan.

This of course freezes my system but at least it produces some sort of error output...

/etc/wlan/shared: line 71: [:too many arguments
/etc/wlan/shared: line 71: [:too many arguments
Shutting Down WLAN Devices: Shutting Down WLAN Devices: wlanctl-ng: Operation not supported FATAL: Module p80211 not found
[OK]
/etc/wlan/shared: line 71: [: too many arguments
Starting WLAN Devices: FATAL: Module p80211 not found.
Failed to load p80211.o.

Then, if i switch off wireless from the front of the computer, the machine goes back to using Ethernet and all is fine.

Suppose the above might help us some?

Have a great morning!  :)

Edit:  Thought this might be helpful...

Should i/we move this thread to Networking?  My wife is really on me about having installed something that won't connect through wireless.

Have a great evening!  :)
