(Solved) Skype sound problems
« on: April 17, 2010, 02:30:32 AM »
After I installed the KDE 2010 final I installed some programs I use, among them Skype.  The first day Skype v 2.1.0.47 worked well and the sound was ok. However the next day I could hear but the person I was talking to couldn't hear me. I tried to do some normal changes in the programs sound settings and changed the system standard to the card specific for my microphone, but nothing helped.

After this I uninstalled Skype and was trying to install an old version 1.4 that had worked well with PCLOS2009, but in this version the mic did not work either. So I uninstalled v1.4 and went for reinstalling the 2.1.0.47 again. However only the skype_static version not the skype is now found in the repositories, so I installed that which showed out to be the latest version 2.1.0.81. But no working mic this time either!

I have always had sound setting problems with Skype on Linux. In PCLOS 2009 one solution was to uninstall the Pulseadio and use Skype v1.4. This time in PCLOS 2010 I now got it to work with Skype_static v2.1.0.81 and by installing Pulseaudio! ;D Letś see for how long...

The fun lasted only for some hours. :( Pulseaudio was unstable form me, when trixing with Audacity and Kmix sound levels Skype lost all sound. Skype worked again after restart, but stopped working after I tried to play with Audacity again. So I unstalled the Pulseadudio and restarted the machine. Now Skype seem to work and I can also mix with the sound mixer. I guess something must have been fixed for Skype v2.1.0.81. ;D

So don't install Pulseaudio to make Skype sound work! Just update to 2.1.0.81...

Hi Connys - yup, other posters had removed Pulseaudio to get their Skype setup working so it did seem a mite odd that yours was working doing the reverse!  :D  :D

Pleased things are A.O.K. for you now. Have fun.

Just finished setup on new install of PCLinuxOS 2010 Gnome. I am surprised that Skype works so far with pulse-audio installed. The test will be tomorrow night when i talk to my gran-daughters for 30-45 minutes.
Will post back.
