[SOLVED] VirtualBox OSE fails with bfs kernel
« on: April 16, 2010, 10:57:00 AM »
Hi,

I just installed the 2.6.32.11-bfs kernel as per the new 2010 iso.

It worked fine except when I installed VirtualBox OSE from the repository I got the error, "Kernel driver not installed ... Please reinstall the kernel module by executing .. /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup".  This doesn't work as the file vboxdrv doesn't exist.
I went back to the original kernel (2.6.32.11) and VirtualBox OSE installed and ran just fine.

Realising the I needed usb support I removed VB OSE and installed the PCLinux 2007 version from the Sun site.  That worked fine so I thought, "perhaps I should try it with the bfs kernel".  Guess what, it works!

So, the VB in the repository doesn't work with the kernel now in the iso but the version on the Sun site (VirtualBox-3.1-3.1.6_59338_pclinuxos2007-1.i586.rpm) works.

Regards,
Russell

Did you reboot after installing Virtualbox from the repo so it could load the drivers? I'm using the OSE version right now with bfs.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Hi Russell

If I'm using VBox from the repo's and I install another kernel I tend to re-install VBox along with the new kernel and that always worked for me when it has rebooted.
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Doh.. No I didn't try rebooting.  Synaptic works so well for most apps without rebooting. :-[
