You know, you are probably right and I had thought of that.  Its just that when you have data on one partition it is so easy to copy it to another. :)  The good news is I have it all backed up, so when I log on again it will be with a reformatted HD and fresh partitions.

For what it's worth, I partition with fdisk and usually format with mkfs, but this time I let the installer format with ext4, to the existing partition that previously held the beta1 installation.

Evidently, my partition table had gotten messed up.  When I deleted all and did a repartition, with a boot partition this time, it formatted EXT4 with no problem and loaded the OS like a charm.  In the back of my mind I knew I needed to do that, but . . .    Did I ever mention that laziness runs in my family - very slowly though. ;)
