Applications open slowly on KDE4
« on: April 14, 2010, 12:04:16 PM »
Especially Synaptic and Firefox.  It almost seems that the OS partition and the /home partition are having trouble working together.  Are they using different file systems?  Do I need to reformat the /home partition?

By "slowly" I mean 1-2 minutes!  That's intolerable.

Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem on my install. Launch Dolphin and set view to show hidden files, then look in your home folder for a file called .gtkrc-2.0. If it's not there, log in as root and copy the file from there.

Same here, though not quite that long (about 30 secs for opening apps). This is something that has gotten worse over time, in the best of XP-style fashion, but I am just going to wait for the shining new 2010 and do a reinstall anyhow.

Cheers!

Take a look at this thread http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,68197.0.html

this has something to do with GTK settings, although I'm not sure what. What I've done previously is to delete all of the hidden files/folders related to GTK/GNOME in my home directory, namely

    * all files/folders  .gtk*
    * all files/folders  .gnome*
    * .gtkrc-2.0*

Thanks for the search, though I don't seem to have any of the files mentioned myself. As said, personally, I'd just wait a few days and wait for the official 2010 release.

Cheers!

Thanks for the responses.  I tried a fresh install of the OS (or /) partition of KDE4 MiniMe and nothing changed.  So the problem appears to be with my /home partition.  I'll try some of the suggestions here and on other threads, starting with deleting that "molecule" theme.

Yes, I saw it, wonderful, isn't it?! As luck would have it, I haven't had time to do something about it yet, so that saved me the trouble of getting the one with the erroneous kernel.  :P

Eureka!  Removing gtk-oxygen-molecule solved my problem!  Firefox and Synaptic open very quickly now.
