Printer Setup - Printerdrake
« on: April 12, 2010, 11:24:21 PM »
I don't understand why the printer setup has to sacrificed to save room on disc's when things like games, multi sound players and tons of locales are loaded and consume space. There is a variety of other software as well that is easy to install and we struggle with printing when it's one of the most important.

Graphics, office, text editors, e-mails, web pages all require printing. If printing can't fit then why not a link such as the one for OpenOffice to get it and install all appropriate dependencies.

Personally i think printerdrake needs a makeover, to much loaded for configuring one printer, then not being able to delete the rest. BLOAT!

Geeze, Would of been really nice to start out with something like "Thanks Texstar and Gang"  for all your hard work! and than perhaps asking the question with out the attitude!  Is it so really darn hard to install printerdrake and move on with things?

Which PCLinuxOS version are you talking about ?

I know about MiniMe, I don't know if it is the same with Gnome or not, but you can almost bet it is. I know in another post Tex said that if you wanted printers and multimedia you would have to install printerdrake and task-multimedia from synaptic. Still this is rather a tiny price to pay for such a quality distro that still fits on a CD

How very true. I once experienced a distro sacrificing essential earlier drivers to make room for Open Office which anyone can download without a problem. Finding and installing drivers is a whole different bag of beans to the majority. It's the kind of priorities that makes you wonder if the Linux community is mature for the broad public.

Thanks, others do get what's going on. It's the reason users fly back and forth between distros. Linux distros have to start looking at the EASIEST way to deliver a desktop that is EASY to install by all, not just seasoned users. Software that can easily be installed and not have to be configured can be left off disks. I've used a lot of distros and decided to give PCLinuxOS a go, but!

I'll wait to see what the 2010 released versions bring, then decide from there.

Sorry you took this personally. No it's not DARN hard to install printerdrake and the bloat of extra software. Why is driver configuration less important than point and click software? Users can install software, but knowing what files have to be loaded for drivers is another matter. This is not about your skill level on linux but about simplicity.

PCLinuxOS, radically simple.
