Firefox icons and toolbars move or disappear on restart
« on: April 16, 2010, 05:19:01 PM »
I'm finding out the hard way that Firefox on Linux acts differently than on M$.  The icons and toolbars move or disappear on restart.  How do I stop this behavior?  Can icons populate the menu bar in a Linux FF ?

Check View --> Toolbars in FF, and check the ones you want to show.

O-P, I did that but still nothing stays in place on restart.

Do you have any extensions installed, that might be interfering with FF main functions?

Yes O-P, lots and lots of extensions, although I had only very few installed when I starting experiencing the problem.  The way I set up my Firefox toolbars is 1) I install  the DragnDrop Toolbar ext.  This allows me to move toolbars.  2) Then I create another toolbar, label it Toolbar 1, drag it below the Navigation toolbar, and populate it  with the url bar and the search toolbar. 3) As I add extensions I periodically stop  to drag their icons to both the Navigation toolbar and the Menu bar.  Icons with drop-down menus generally go on the menu bar. 4) I employ a two tier bookmark toolbar using the MultirowBookmarksToolbar extension to house folders  containing my 20,000+ bookmarks, and then hide them with the Bookmark Autohider extension.  When my icons and toolbars started going askew after doing a Firefox restart I got frustrated and turned my computer off for a while.  When I returned, turned on my computer, and reopened Firefox all my toolbars and icons were in the right place.  I haven't seen any instability since.  It's very strange.

I spoke too soon.  When I did a Firefox restart the problem occurred again, and like before it was resolved when I restarted my computer.

Crikey!! I'd need an extra tool shed in the garden for all those tools  ;D  :D  ;)

I would suggest starting FF with a new clean profile (firefox -P) and adding your addons one at a time to see if you can find the "offender" that way
