Firefox syncing
« on: April 12, 2010, 04:43:12 PM »
I would like to set up Firefox with a single profile across a number of distros, eg LXDE and PClos main.

All my searching has so far produced only the web-based solution but i do not care to use this, even if it is convenient.
Can anyone point me to a solution using my own desktop machine?

I have set up separate /tmp,/var and /data partitiions and was hoping to use the /data as the resient
partition for this purpose.

I carried out a short trial by copying the PCLos "profile.ini" file to the data partition and then editing the LXDE version to point to the data partition entry.
This did not work however, all i keep getting is "Firefox is already running, you need to reboot" (or similar).

Am on the right track or is there a simpler way?

you can use firefox portable for windows, it stores everything on a usb stick but it requires wine, you can use it on multiple distros

also you could have all those desktops installed on a single partition(install kde4 then add lxde, gnome, xfce and others more)) and let them use a single home folder sharing the same config folder for firefox

also avoid the multiple partitions that can make confusing your system

Thanks T6.

I already have all the individual "Home" sections allocated to a separate /home partition, each listed as a sub folder eg LXDE/home, PCLos/home, and would prefer to keep them as such to avoid any crossover (sorry, i should have mentioned this above), but this method also leads to problems with permisions, especially when adding "testor" users.

I would like to keep two separate distro's in use as i tend to use the machine for testing (not having a separate machine for this purpose) and too often break things.
As a result i often have to reinstall as my recovery skills are very poor, and the bookmarks/passwords are a real pain to keep restoring.

my point is to have only one home partition or don't have it, just root partition

i always did this and for many years i never had crossover or weird messes but i only have one distro installed at each time, usually i don't save nothing form the configs, sometimes compiz profiles but nothing more

anyway if you like to test things the only reasonable way to do it and avoid breaking things is to have two hard disks and play with only one of them

Many thanks T6.

I also used to keep a single user in a separate Home partition, then saw something on here about possible complications, hence the switch.

It probably is time to revert back to a single user and keep good backups.

And just to avoid confusion, the term "testing" i used previously should more accurately have read "experimenting", "testing" implies i know what i am doing, rather far from the truth.

Hi Jankers,

Not certain what FF items you are syncing but I use the following FF addons to make my FF life easier on my various systems.

XMarks = Syncs all Bookmarks/folders to an Encrypted Server (accessible from any PC using login and password)

LastPass = Syncs all Password and Logins to an Encrypted Server  (accessible from any PC using login and password)  Note: Lastpass can also "create secure passwords and encrypt them

FEBE and CLEO = FEBE backs up all your FF addons to a specific folder and CLEO allows you to "Pack" all the backed up addons into one file.

In the case of the CleoPack I then simply copy it to one of my DropBox folders which I can then access from any PC I use.

Then when I install or use FF for the first time I just do File > Open > and open the CleoPack and all my addons are installed in one hit.

AND Because XMarks and LastPass are "packed" in the CleoPack I no longer have to re-install them

Don't know whether this will be any help to you but I thought I'd post just in case....
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Many thanks menotu,

Sorry for the delay in replying, have been messing around some more and finally decided to have just the one Home folder across the PCLos distro types.
That info about FEBE and CLeo looks just the job and i shall certainly check it out.

If it is just the DE's that differ (i.e., they are all on PCLOS...same versions, etc), have you considered one install of PCLOS and just install all the DE's you would like access to?
That would reduce duplication of files, reduce multiple updates, etc.  Given enough horsepower, you could even have different DE's running concurrently, by using the switch user approach.

Just some food for thought...
