installing using two hd's 2nd hd for video & music
« on: April 12, 2010, 10:13:27 AM »
I'm now a PCLinuxOS convert and have abandon windows altogether.  So now I have two hds  I want to use the 1st for normal install and use the 2nd hd for video and music.  My question is when I run the installer how do I choose the 2hd for my video's and music?  I've been with pclos since the 93 version, and it just keeps getting better.
Thanks in advance..............Al.

I wouldn't .......  I would do it after the install.

But I guess you could choose the mount points for the music and video partition during the install process.
You are asked for the location of root and home and should (if I remember correctly) have options for other mount points also.

I would still prefer to do it after the install .......  for new users I might even suggest they disconnect the second drive with the valuable data on it before installing, to prevent any error or mishap.

Yes, especially if you also have a mixed system with both SATA and IDE drives. I have SATA as my primary boot drive in bios however the Drakxtools/Installer seems give IDE priority over SATA due to the way my bios sets the drives up. My IDE drive gets SDA and my SATA drive gets SDB. So I just unplug my IDE drive so my SATA drive gets SDA.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

My thoughts are it would be easier on install.  On PCLinuxOS 2007 when you check konqueor file manager you were able to see all drives, on 2010 this is not present?    Will we ever see that again?
I know on Dolphin you can see all drives.  The reason I want to use 2 drives is that I'm running low on the first drive,  the second is not being used and is 500gigs.  .............Al.

The suggestion was to disconnect the second drive when installing and reconnect it after the install was working.

If you think it easier to leave it installed then that is OK too.
It is your PC.

I don't really know if if is easier,  I just thought it might be.  If I do it on install how do I assign to the 2nd drive?  Do I have to choose one of the options from the list or can I call it anything I choose like maybe '/video'?    ....Al.

This is the setup I have on my desktop which is running PCLOS2009 KDE3.5 at the moment. I installed to disk1 (sata) first then attached disk2 (pata) and formatted to ext3. I auto mount disk2 on boot. I use disk1 for "/" and "/home" and disk2 is just media files. Works a treat  :)

I have been installing with multiple drives for awhile now, and I just make sure I am aware of the partition size allocated for /root and /home and a swap in between which makes it very noticeable to me, which is on my first drive. My second drive which is a very large drive with two very two large partitions for my music other media on the second drive. Just make sure during the install to take your time and avoid distractions. Of course there is nothing wrong with being extra careful and disconnecting the second hard drive if it easily assessable, and if you are comfortable doing that.
